INDOOR PLANTS MAINTENANCE – HOW TO TAKE CARE?
Everyone is fond of Indoor Plants, and you may find them wherever you visit, whether it be a mall, an office, a hospital or clinic, a residential building entrance, or any possible indoor space you may think of. The plants not only add décor to the space, but even have their benefits. While the release of clean air may be one of the very well-known benefits, other factors may be, for good-fragrance, to control the moisture in the air, for healing process, and so on.
Owning indoor-plants, and having them placed in their space is just the first step. What is most important after that, is maintaining them, and keeping them healthy, which is the challenging part.
In our blog today, we will be giving you tips on what are the do’s and don’ts of maintaining your indoor-plants.
1. PROVIDING YOUR PLANTS WITH WATER CONSISTENTLY
At all times, the soil must NOT be too dry or over-watered. This can cause the plants roots to get damaged, and prevents the plant from growing. Certain signs to take care of during the watering process are:
If you see that there is standing water at the bottom of the container, it means that the plant has been over-watered
Those plants that are in the succulent family require watering in intervals, as doing so in one-go can cause damage.
When the soil gets lighter in colour, it means that it is time to water your plants
2. USE ROOM TEMPERATURE WATER
The perfect water-temperature for your plants is approximately 22 Degree Celsius. Too hot water can cause root damage, and even gives the plant a shock. In case it is too cold, the causes dormancy in the plant, which could suppress any vegetation/flowering growth.
3. SELECTION OF A POT THAT HAS A GOOD DRAINAGE IS NECESSARY
While selecting a plant pot, make sure the pot has drainage holes at the bottom. The best material for pots would be ceramic or clay, compared to plastic, metal or glass, as they tend to absorb water better, in case of over-watering.
4. ADEQUATE SUNLIGHT IS IMPORANT FOR YOUR INDOOR-PLANTS TOO
The process of photosynthesis, which is an essential and natural process for plants, happens best under sunlight. Hence, giving your indoor plants sunlight is important, however, making sure the duration, intensity and quality of light is moderate, and not over-done. Direct light can be damaging, however, a well-lit room would be sufficient for healthy growth of the plant. Usually flowering plants require approximately 12 hours of light per day, while foliage plants require approximately 14hours per day.
5. AVOID RELOCATING YOUR PLANTS OFTEN
Like humans, plants as well take time to adapt to their surroundings. Hence, avoid moving them around a lot. Be it from a hot to cold part of a house, or a dark to lighted part, make the movement gradual, starting from hour a day, and increase it over time, for a week, until it gets settled to its new environment.
6. FEED YOUR PLANT WITH THE BALANCED FERTILIZER, 10-10-10.
The “10-10-10” is basically the apt ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The ingredients and nutrients that make a healthy fertilizer. Potting soil, which is a micro-nutrient is another essential requirements for indoor plants, for a healthy growth and a longer life. Make sure if you have a flowering plant or a foliage plant. Flowering plants require higher potassium, while foliage plants require higher Nitrogen.
7. PRUNE YOUR PLANTS REGULARLY
Depending upon the type of plant, the intervals of pruning may vary. Hence, a read-up on the type of plant you have, and how often is the pruning required, is important. Dead branches or stems can attract bugs, hence, cutting them off is necessary. While pruning the leave node, do so at 45degree angle. This promotes the growth of the plant, and a longer life too.
