meet karen badalian — our art director and head architect, and part of electric architects since the very beginning, back in moscow in 2011.
most of what we’ve built since carries his hand: masterplans, buildings, interiors, objects. and across all of it there’s one constant fascination — light and shadow, rhythm, ornament. it shows up at every scale he works in, from a city block down to something you can hold. his visual language reflects our cinematic approach: reading space as a sequence, composing it like a frame. that way of thinking sits at the core of how we design.
here he is with his newest piece: “k.d.”, a light-refracting stand in stainless steel. intersecting sheets of metal that catch the light differently depending on where you stand and how the object sits. it’s the kind of thing you end up turning around in your hands for longer than you meant to.

AC Design Engineering office, yerevan — interiors.

the head office occupies the top two levels of the building as a double-height space. material palette is deliberately technical: polycarbonate sheeting, plywood, exposed steel connections, visible ductwork and services. no suspended ceilings, no concealment — the interior logic mirrors the engineering discipline of the company it houses.

natural light enters through the full-height glazing and filters through polycarbonate partitions, creating diffused working conditions across the open floor plate. the ground floor of the building houses a lighting showroom, also designed by electric architects.

AC Design Engineering office building, yerevan.

a soviet-era administrative building — renovated, extended by two floors vertically and six metres in plan. the existing concrete frame is exposed and left legible; new corrugated black metal cladding wraps the addition, creating a clear material reading between old and new.

the section is organised around a generous public edge — linear balconies running the full length of each floor, large roof terraces, and exterior staircases that double as facade elements and circulation infrastructure. rental spaces occupy the lower floors; the client’s own office takes the upper two levels as a double-height mezzanine condition.

the brief was clear: industrial aesthetics, affordable construction, maximum usable area. the building doesn’t conceal its logic — it exposes it.

sunday towers / building z: elevating spatial porosity and public-private connectivity

at the ground plane, building z shifts from an enclosed mass to an open, permeable structure elevated on monumental concrete pilotis. this structural lift establishes a continuous, multi-level public corridor beneath the building, seamlessly channeling pedestrian circulation from the street into the 5,000 m² central car-free courtyard.

above, the building mass breaks into cantilevered volumes and double-height voids. these strategic subtractions accommodate planted sky terraces and integrated green pockets, creating intermediate microclimates and extending living areas into the open air while framing panoramic vistas across the city.

sunday towers / building z: a study in vertical rhythm, tectonic layering, and contextual reinterpretations.

as a primary gatekeeper volume framing the district’s main entrance axis, building z addresses the challenge of scale through an articulated double-skin envelope. the outer layer introduces a corrugated metallic screen of lancet arches that intercepts direct solar gain while generating a shifting matrix of light and shadow across the structural grid.

behind this permeable screen, a warm, textured stone volume establishes a dialogue with yerevan’s masonry heritage. vertical louvers, recessed loggias, and repeating modules break down the building’s mass into a balanced tectonic language—delivering depth, functional shading, and visual lightness to the high-rise silhouette.

seeing the 1876 persian consulate filled with friends, colleagues, and great design minds was the perfect conclusion to our milan journey. bringing the anatomy lamp and vice consumption collections into this historic space—soundtracked by warm music tones—created an atmosphere we won’t soon forget.

following our showcase at milan design week 2026, electric architects invite you to a special retrospective exhibition showcasing our two distinct collections, framed within one of yerevan’s most breathtaking architectural landmarks.

for three days, the 1876 persian consulate building—with its historic mirror mosaic niches and ornamental wall paintings—will serve as a spatial canvas for our milan installations:

zone 1: the anatomy lamp | our study of light, skeletal structure, and spatial silence, developed in collaboration with impact acoustic and the architectural association (aa) of london for alcova.

zone 2: vice consumption | our collection of heavy, philosophical smoking devices exploring the ritual of self-reflection, originally debuted at deoron.

to accompany the design topology, the entire exhibition will be soundtracked by continuous vinyl listening sessions, blending historic architecture, contemporary design, and analog sound.

opening night: july 24 | 19:00

exhibition dates: july 25–26 | 11:00 – 23:00

the intervention is built on a clear architectural logic: cascading topography structures the ground plane into a sequence of levels that register as different spatial experiences — not just a flat promenade but a composed section. orthogonal geometry in stone defines the framework; water elements introduce movement and acoustic texture. the tree canopy is designed not as decoration but as an active structural element — creating enclosure, filtering light, establishing the feeling of a room without walls.

the programmatic ambition is just as deliberate. the undefined void in front of the theatre is resolved into a proper civic square — scaled for performances, gatherings, and the everyday occupation of people who simply want a place to sit in proximity to culture. parking is pulled back. the pedestrian realm expands. the street stops being a gap in the city and starts being a place in it.
