Castle Stalker is a four story keep in the county of Argyll, Scotland.

In the Gaelic this would be Stalcaire, meaning Hunter or Falconer.

It resides on a smal tidal islet on Loch Laich, which is an inlet off of Loch Linnhe. The islet is accessible from the shore at low tide, with some difficulty.

Originally a small fort built around the 1300’s by Clan McDougall, it was rebuilt as a castle by the Stewarts around the mid 1400’s.

The Stewarts relative King James IV of Scotland visited the castle around 1620, and as a result of a drunken bet, the castle passed to Clan Campbell.

The Stewarts and the Campbells traded the castle a number of times, but the Campbells abandoned it around 1840 when it lost its roof (or it was removed to avoid a roof tax!).
In 1908 it was purchased by a Charles Stewart, who carried out some basic works to help minimise damage.

In 1965 Lt Col Stewart Allward purchased the castle and renovated and restored it, taking about 10 years to do so.

It is one of the best-preserved medieval tower houses in western Scotland and is a Category A listed building.
It remains in private hands but is open to public viewings during the summer.

There can also be a lot of other plans to review for the building.
These can be very specific to a particular item such as a stair layout, or broader, such as a plan showing what walls will be painted what colour.

Some material suppliers will also supply plans or notes on how their product is to be installed.

There can also be quite specific plans for things such as the kitchen cabinets, or maybe some fancy tile patterns.

It could be simple schedule showing material types used in the building.

A simple one is just a drawing register, which has a list of all the current plans on it, and maybe a 3D image as well.

Dimensions and measurements are important, as without these on the plans, the builder or contractor can only guess where something is to go. This will not make for an efficient or cost-effective building.

In Australia we typically measure everything with the metric system.

Site plans can show dimensions in metres(m) or millimetres(mm).

All other plans are typically shown in millimetres, and all our building products are typically noted in mm, unless they are quite long (such as timber), and then it is in metres.

Certificates of Title can be quite old documents, and they can show measurements in metres and millimetres, or feet and inches, or chains and links!

Chains and links are a quite old method of measurement, and the first time I came across them, I was a bit stumped for a while until I realised what was going on.
Below is a link to a website that has a fair bit of info on old measurements.

Warwick castle is in the county of Warwickshire, England, along the river Avon.

Originally a timber fort built by the Anglo-Saxons around the early 900’s to counter Viking incursions, it was rebuilt almost 250 years later into a stone-built castle.

It held a strong strategic position overlooking the valley and the river crossing.

In the late 1300’s the castle’s defences were significantly enhanced with a gatehouse, a barbican (fortified gateway), and additional towers.

In the early 1480’s, King Richard III began construction of further enhancements in the form of two gun towers.

Not long after it fell into ruin for about 100 years before being converted into a country house in the early 1600’s, and the interiors modernised in the early 1670’s.

In 1871 a fire ran through the castle, gutting much of the interior. It was said to have been started by a thieving butler. The main structure was undamaged, and it was completely repaired for approximately 9700 pounds (approximately 1.2m pounds as of 2024).

The castle had been the focus of visitors since the end of the 17th century, but they had become a nuisance by 1885, with the castle being closed.
However just 15 years later it reopened with a ticket office and official tour guide.
And through the last 120 odd years, the tourist potential has been expanded upon, until today, where it is a very busy location with many events held regularly.

Building design can happen in many ways:
design the exterior of the building working your way in,
design the interior of the building and work your way out,
design for spaces and function and then wrap it in a skin.
Everyone has their own way and style of design, and sometimes this can help us see what a building may look like, before a single line is drawn.

This can tell you as much about the building, as it can the designer.

Services plans are used to show where services such sewer, stormwater, mains water, electrical elements and air conditioning elements need to go, along with any associated items, such as ductwork, pipes, etc.

These can be drawn up by the designer to show where they would like the items to go and then developed further by the service trades to ensure that all required codes and standards are met.

Coca Castle, Spain, located in the Coca municipality.
It was constructed in the 15th century, by the archbishop of Seville, Alonso de Fonseca, during the reign of King Enrique IV of Castile.

The double walls are 2.5m thick and is circled by a deep dry moat.
Unlike many castles, this is lies on flat land instead of a hilltop.
It is made up of two curtain walls, with towers at regular intervals and corners.

It is considered to be the highest example of brick military architecture with Mudéjar filigree work. Mudéjar is the architectural style of Islamic craftsmen living under Christian reign.
The brick however is not the same sort of brick as used for houses, but hardened to withstand enemy attack during a siege.
It survived a number of attacks in its early years, and in the next 200 years underwent repair and renovation.
After 1730 it fell into disrepair due to neglect and disuse, and many important historical artifacts were either lost or destroyed.
During the Peninsular war of the early 1800’s it was captured by the French and fell into further ruin, as the French obviously were not concerned with its upkeep.

In 1926 it was declared a national monument of Spain, but no restoration work was undertaken for another 30 years.
In 1958, after being fully renovated, it became a school for foresters.
