Trunk injections is the best systemic treatment to control o Phytophthora cinnamomi or cinnamon funguswhich is a microscopic, soil-borne water mould that causes root rot and dieback in a massive range of plants. Its name translates to "plant destroyer". A pathogen that destroys plant root systems and starves them of water and nutrients. Phytophthora is actually a water mould (oomycete) more closely related to algae
and is classified as one of the top 100 worst invasive species globally.
If site is left untreated and infested with Phytophthora cinnamomi, it cannot be eradicated. It persists and spreads continuously through soil, groundwater, and root-to-root contact. But treatment via injection halts lesion extension inside the trunk, reduces plant mortality, and assists infected trees in recovering and as we know stressed trees can’t fight back when it comes to different borers and wood chewing pests and diseases.
Different soil type play a big roll and to keep some of our beautiful big trees these are one of two yearly treatments, this not for every tree and only really for high value trees and parklands sporting clubs schools and your fav tree. It cost money yes why cuz it takes time and experience to know what to treat at what rates and injection spacing, angles injection holes, how deep into which layer and so on it not just a straight forward process to even be able to to get injectable systemic chemicals and use them . It’s something I was taught as a young farmers son on the 45 year old avocado trees as a kid . And for many years grow up using this practice on avocados. Well today in my business it’s a practice I use regularly, and for certain trees it’s one of two treatments I do suggest.
phosphorus injections can last up to about 3 years but suggest a repeating the process 2.5 years and timing it in with a borer injection which is 12 monthly to 2 years depending on Tree type.
Trees have to be a certain size. I don’t like doing anything under around 12 cm or what we can consider a medium size tree.
For certain trees we can also make up macro and micro nutrient mixes for injection with or without systemic insecticides to help target issues with pest and disease and nutrition.
Such as root rot and borers and other insects and pests.
Tree And injection is far more effective and efficient and a safer way for handling and using chemical, and targeting pests . certain systemic cannot be given pre-flowering
