Do you shut down your evaporative cooler for winter?

Why get an air-conditioning technician to shut it down?

One of the best reasons is to have your system inspected after the massive summer we've had. A technician can check for any faults, such as:

●Worn or damaged pads

●Leaking hoses

●A broken or worn belt

Other maintenance issues that could affect performance

If any parts need replacing, they can often bring the required spares and fit them while servicing the unit, so you're ready to go when summer returns.

In the worst-case scenario, if your evaporative cooler is nearing the end of its life and needs replacing, finding out now gives you several months to plan and budget before the hot weather arrives.

Unfortunately, the main PCB on this older wall-mounted unit had failed, and with the manufacturer discontinuing the replacement part, a complete system replacement was the only viable option.

The customer also wanted the new unit installed on the ground, and we were more than happy to make it happen.

The age-old question: do you repair your air conditioner, or is it time to replace it?

There are a lot of factors to consider:

✅ How old is the unit?
✅ Are replacement parts still available?
✅ Does it use R22 refrigerant?
✅ Is the unit so rusted that panels and components are difficult to access?

All of these factors play a role in deciding whether a repair is worthwhile.

In the past, replacing a faulty part was often the obvious choice. These days, however, spare parts are becoming more expensive, and in some cases the repair cost can be more than half the price of a brand-new air conditioning system.

At Olson Cooling & Electrical, we'll always give you the option of repairing your existing unit or installing a new one. We'll also be upfront about parts availability. There's no point investing in a repair if other critical parts have been discontinued and the system may only last another few months before needing replacement anyway.

If your air conditioner isn't working properly, give the team at Olson Cooling & Electrical a call. We'll help you find the most cost-effective solution for your home or business.

Have you switched your air conditioner over to heating and found it doesn’t seem to be working properly?

It might just need a service!

We recently visited a customer who thought their air conditioner had a major fault. After inspecting the unit, we found the main issue was simply blocked filters.

At 96 years old, climbing ladders to clean filters wasn't an option for him. Once the filters were cleaned and the unit serviced, he couldn't believe the difference and said it had never worked so well.

Regular servicing helps keep your air conditioner running efficiently, improves performance, and can help reduce running costs.

Its as easy as changing a light globe?.

What happens when the starter disintegrates in your hand?

Best to call an electrician, they have the right tools and knowledge to remove the old broken starter and install a new one safely.

Starting to get into heat pump season!

If your heat pump has stopped working, give us a call.

It might sound surprising, but when it comes to heat pumps and refrigeration systems, it’s best to call a licensed refrigeration mechanic. By law, only a qualified and licensed refrigeration mechanic can legally work on refrigeration systems.

Some days fault finding can take hours… other days it’s as easy as flicking a switch.

This unit had tripped its control circuit breaker. We turned the unit off, reset the switch, and the aircon is now back up and running.

We also tested the amp draw, which was well below the 16A trip limit.

We’ll let the unit run for a few days and return to make sure everything is operating as it should.

This customer saw our $150 service special and jumped straight on it — an absolute bargain.

A service doesn’t stop faults from happening, but it does help identify issues before the unit breaks down. Things like blocked filters, low refrigerant, or fan motor bearings starting to fail can all be picked up early.

During this service, we found the unit didn’t have a safety tray installed when the air conditioner was originally fitted. We advised the customer, and they’ll be contacting the installer to have it sorted.

As the weather cools down, people often ask whether they should shut down their evaporative cooler for winter.

Some do, some don’t — but for an older evap like this 20-year-old unit, shutting it down properly can make a big difference. The water sitting in the bottom can become stagnant over winter, which means more cleaning and potential issues when summer rolls around again.

By draining the water and switching the unit off for winter, it’s much easier to clean and inspect before the next season. It’s also the perfect time to spot problems early, like:

●leaking hoses

●worn belts

●damaged pads

●general wear and tear

We can quote any repairs or replacement parts now, so you’re ready before the first hot day hits.

A lot of newer evaporative coolers have automatic dump valves that drain the water after 72 hours. While they’re marketed as “self-cleaning,” we still recommend a proper service before summer to make sure everything is running as it should.
