Many of you have been following the journey of The Space, and I’m so excited to share that we’ll be opening the doors for the Australian Passivhaus Association’s national Passivhaus Open Days this November!

We’re still putting the final pieces together, but we’re getting close to the finish line, and I’d love to welcome you in and share a little of the process behind this project.

Designed as a small secondary dwelling and future Earthy Haus studio, The Space explores how we can create homes that are energy efficient, affordable, healthy, comfortable and beautiful to live in.

A little retreat amongst the gumtrees… Gumtree Studio is designed to feel warm, light-filled and deeply connected to its bushland setting. With passive solar design, natural materials and building science working quietly behind the scenes, it’s a space that embraces the beauty of its surroundings while offering comfort in every season.

This project is currently at DA stage, and we’re so excited to see it come to life over the coming months.

We are saving on labour and finishes so we can prioritise the building envelope, the part of the house that will be working for us for decades to come.

A new life for an existing home.

When a project involves retrofitting and extending an existing building, we start by looking at what is already there.

What can we keep? How can the new addition sit comfortably within its surroundings? And how can we create a home that feels like the client?

At Earthy Haus, we believe good design responds to the site, respects the existing building and reflects the people who will live there.

But we also look beyond how a home looks.

We want it to be healthy, comfortable and durable for decades to come. For this project, that means investigating the existing structure, retaining its good bones and using building science to transform its performance.

An external layer of insulation, carefully detailed membranes, improved weather protection, airtightness, high-performance windows and doors, and thoughtful responses to the site’s bushfire requirements will all form part of the process.

This is still at sketch design stage, with plenty to investigate and refine.

The goal? To give an existing home a whole new century of life.

The details | Part 2

This one is about the details… and the compromises too.

We designed an LED strip into the ceiling pitch to highlight the change in geometry. But the plasterboard joints aren’t perfectly seamless in a level 4 finish…

The team did the best they could within the budget we had. A Level 5 finish would have meant another layer of labour and cost, and with the number of decisions and dollars adding up throughout a build, sometimes you have to decide where that money is best spent.

I actually think this is an important part of sharing the process. Great homes don’t happen without compromises. Every dollar counts.

Gyprock & plastering | Part 1

From sheets going up to the final sanding, the walls and ceilings are now complete and ready for paint.

A big thank you to the team for the care and attention to detail throughout this stage.

The same view, at different stages of the build.

From the membrane and electrical exposed, to insulation going in, to the plasterboard closing everything up. Each layer slowly building towards the home that will eventually sit behind the finishes.

There’s something so special about seeing this process happen. So much of the work that makes a home comfortable, healthy and energy efficient will eventually disappear from view and become a feeling. But right now, you can see it all coming together.

The layers are going in, the spaces are taking shape, and we’re getting ready for the next chapter: interiors, materials and finishes. 🩶

A little detail I love: the timber sill was made to perfectly match the window frame, creating that beautiful, seamless look.

But the frame itself is actually UPVC, not timber. It gives us the warmth and character of timber detailing, with the performance and durability of a high-performance window system!

We put a lot of thought into the details that make a home feel good to live in. In this small renovation, we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose sight of the things that matter to us: comfort, efficiency, healthy living and, of course, good design.

One of those little details is this Expella odourless toilet. The ventilation system draws odours directly from the bowl, helping keep the bathroom feeling fresh without relying on air fresheners or simply extracting the air after the fact.

Because comfort isn’t just about temperature. It’s also about the air you breathe, the way a space feels, and all those small things that contribute to our everyday wellbeing.

Good design should take care of you in more ways than one. 🤍
