A little detail I love: the timber sill was made to perfectly match the window frame, creating that beautiful, seamless look.

But the frame itself is actually UPVC, not timber. It gives us the warmth and character of timber detailing, with the performance and durability of a high-performance window system!

We put a lot of thought into the details that make a home feel good to live in. In this small renovation, we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose sight of the things that matter to us: comfort, efficiency, healthy living and, of course, good design.

One of those little details is this Expella odourless toilet. The ventilation system draws odours directly from the bowl, helping keep the bathroom feeling fresh without relying on air fresheners or simply extracting the air after the fact.

Because comfort isn’t just about temperature. It’s also about the air you breathe, the way a space feels, and all those small things that contribute to our everyday wellbeing.

Good design should take care of you in more ways than one. 🤍

Second blower door test at The Space.
A few new penetrations, a few little leaks… but overall, a very good result.

One step closer to sealing it all up.

Taking a moment to appreciate this polished concrete colour palette.

A little bit of denim hiding inside the walls of The Space.

We’re using Jeanius insulation from Planet Protector Group, made from recycled denim and performing beautifully both thermally and acoustically.

We’re using 90mm R2.5 batts, carefully halved to fit our 45mm service cavity. It’s not the easiest product to halve, but we’re committed! We’ve also allowed for the R-value loss from this process in our calculations.

A great example of choosing materials that are not only high-performing, but also give existing materials a second life.

Today marks two years since I took the leap and launched Earthy Haus.

What a wild ride it has been.

There have been exciting projects, big decisions, unexpected challenges, plenty of learning, and a lot of moments where I’ve had to figure things out as I went. Building a business from the ground up while designing homes that reflect what I believe in has been equal parts terrifying, rewarding and incredibly fulfilling.

For those who don’t know me yet, I’m Karina. I studied Architecture overseas, and here in Australia I’m a building designer and Certified Passivhaus Designer. With a German-Brazilian background, I’m now lucky enough to also call myself an Australian citizen.

I started Earthy Haus because I believe our homes can be so much more than beautiful spaces. They can be healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, deeply connected to place and genuinely wonderful places to live.

And this year feels particularly special.

I’m currently watching the construction of my own design studio take shape. A space I designed to embody so much of what Earthy Haus stands for: Passivhaus design, building science focused on health and comfort, thoughtful materials, and adaptability, allowing the space to evolve and transform over time.

Standing here and seeing something that started as an idea slowly becoming a physical space is pretty surreal.

I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way: the clients who trusted me with their homes, collaborators, builders, consultants, friends, family, and all the wonderful people who have followed along, shared, encouraged and cheered from the sidelines.

Thank you. Truly.

So here’s to the lessons, the beautiful homes, the hard work, the messy bits, the exciting bits, the studio, and all the projects still to come. 🤎

The polished concrete reveal is always exciting.

There’s something beautiful about a material that holds a little bit of mystery. You don’t truly know how the colours, textures and aggregate will come together until the final polish reveals what’s been hiding beneath the surface.

And how wonderful that the result feels so connected to the landscape and the overall design. I’m so glad it turned out even better than I had imagined.

There is so much more to polished concrete than I ever realised.

Being there and watching the process unfold, really gave me an appreciation for the amount of skill, time, machinery and craftsmanship that goes into this finish. It’s quite impressive to see it all happen.

And after all of that… I absolutely love the finished floor.

I’ll show you the final result in the next video.

In a world of constant noise and overstimulation, a little quietness is essential.

Having a calm, quiet shelter to come home to isn’t a luxury reserved for remote cabins in the bush. It’s something we can design for.

Airtight construction, good insulation and high-quality windows and doors can dramatically reduce the noise coming from outside, creating a home that feels genuinely peaceful.

Because comfort isn’t just about temperature.

Sometimes, it’s about being able to hear… nothing. 🤍

Another exciting milestone at The Space.

We’ve just poured the topping slab, and it’s starting to feel more and more like a real home.

This slab will eventually become the finished polished floor while also providing the thermal mass that helps keep the home comfortable year-round.

I already love the earthy colour of the concrete, and I can’t wait to see it once it’s polished.

Thanks for following along on the journey. I hope you enjoy this little behind-the-scenes look. More to come soon!
