I agree with people who say that it is best to have separation between dissimilar surfaces. In this case this shadow gap serves two purposes. It looks good and it is easier to paint without getting paint on the stone.

I find it best to pre drill for the whole screw especially in hardwood. Most of the countersink/pre drill combos won’t drill deep enough. So I use a long series drill bit and countersink afterwards. I think countersinking is necessary no matter what type of self countersinking head the screw has. In the end they all tend to raise the fibers around them going in and most certainly coming out.

Dipping drill bit in wax seems to help with shavings sticking to it.

Here is a plywood ceiling and feature wall I did. Ceiling came up nice, there was a fair bit of scribing along the walls to get the reveals right.

The feature wall looks pretty good too. The ply went on the plaster which meant I had to get creative with the architrave. Decided to laminate a 18mm and 11mm thick piece of architrave. Nailed the 18mm preassembled architrave on first and then glued and nailed on the 11mm preassembled architrave.

There was a fair bit in it to replace this old decking. I had no idea what was waiting for me once I ripped the boards up. I was hoping for the best, but there were some issues. Most of the joists were put in with just one batten screw, some had no fasteners at all.

So I swapped out the rotten joists. Moved them over and added some extra joists to get 450mm spacing. Added joist hangers (went with stainless steel as this house is quite close to the beach) and joist protector. Cut the existing deck straight and screwed a rip of decking to the ends of existing decking to pick up an odd end that was hanging in between the joists.

Cut, screwed down new boards, gave it a light sand and here is the end result.

Many people don’t think that using joist protector is necessary, but I do. Debris still collects between the boards and the boards might start to deteriorate, but the joists stay separated from all of that and last longer.

Had to swap out spigots for pool fence. The new spigots had a differently shaped base (we couldn’t source more of the existing ones).

Replace the whole board because of different fixing points? I don’t think so, just plug it.

Client had some shelving in the carport which was made up of old internal doors and a bit of framing.

Built them something sturdier and more pleasant to look at.
