There was a fair bit in it to replace this old decking. I had no idea what was waiting for me once I ripped the boards up. I was hoping for the best, but there were some issues. Most of the joists were put in with just one batten screw, some had no fasteners at all.
So I swapped out the rotten joists. Moved them over and added some extra joists to get 450mm spacing. Added joist hangers (went with stainless steel as this house is quite close to the beach) and joist protector. Cut the existing deck straight and screwed a rip of decking to the ends of existing decking to pick up an odd end that was hanging in between the joists.
Cut, screwed down new boards, gave it a light sand and here is the end result.
Many people don’t think that using joist protector is necessary, but I do. Debris still collects between the boards and the boards might start to deteriorate, but the joists stay separated from all of that and last longer.
