Plumbers must be registered or licensed with the BPC to lawfully carry out plumbing work in Victoria.

Each class of plumbing work has two levels of accreditation.

Registered plumbers must comply with the relevant standards and regulations but are not authorised to supervise apprentices or other plumbers or issue compliance certificates.

Licensed plumbers have additional knowledge and experience. They are authorised to carry out these duties and undertake design work.

Licensed plumbers must also hold the required insurance, which helps protect consumers if work is defective.

The BPC does not register or license plumbing companies, only individuals, so consumers should ask the person carrying out the work to show their accreditation.

They can also check registration or license status and disciplinary history at bpc.vic.gov.au/check

Carrying out plumbing work without the appropriate registration or licence is an offence and may lead to disciplinary action or prosecution.

There are 22,000 registered gasfitter’s in Victoria alone which are a fragment of workers downstream of the so called gas industry data capture. The 215,000 jobs is a very narrow data capture and demonstrates this article in fact completely misleading and lacks any real balance in its content. Clearly written by an organization with its own agenda!

We recently visited a property to provide a quote for a new gas log fire after the client was told it wasn’t repairable. We quickly identified that the appliance was not flueing correctly and was the result of a damaged flue cowl. Subsequently birds were found to have nested in the flue. Once removed with our specialist access equipment, the gas log fire was recommissioned and we had one very happy customer!
