Leaves are coming down and the autumn rain has been heavy this week.

Good time to check your downpipes, surface drain covers, and inspection pits before the leaf litter builds up. A blocked drain in July is a much bigger problem than a quick check today. Working out in remote communities, we used to deal with drain blockages that were days from the nearest parts supplier. You learn quickly to stay ahead of it.

After a long summer and school holidays, your hot water system has been working harder than you realise. Before the cold nights settle in, it is worth a quick check. A weeping pressure relief valve, a flickering pilot light, or sounds it was not making three months ago are worth catching in April rather than June. Good weekend coming up for the anglers. The Wentworth Angling Club has their fishing competition running this Saturday on the Murray. And with school holidays kicking off from next week, it should be a nice busy couple of weeks around the river.

After 250mm of rain, worth doing a quick check around the property before the week gets away.

The first things to look at are stormwater drains, inspection pits, and any low spots where water has been pooling. Heavy rain moves things underground you would not expect.

If you have a rainwater tank, check the first flush diverter. A big downpour after a dry stretch can flush sediment and debris straight into the tank. If you drink from it, worth getting it tested.

Seen this pattern in flood prone and remote areas many times across my career. The damage you do not notice straight away is usually the most expensive fix later.

Your hot water system worked hard over summer.

As autumn temperatures drop, it starts working harder again in the mornings and evenings. Sediment builds up from months of heavy use and quietly reduces efficiency before you notice anything is wrong.

Worth having a look now for any signs of rust, leaks, or funny noises. A check in April is a lot easier than a breakdown in July when you actually need it most.

I have seen plenty of systems that were fine in April and dead by June because no one checked them when it was easy to.

NSW school holidays kick off this Saturday and run through to the 26th. Wentworth Shire Libraries have movie afternoons, craft sessions, and programs for the little ones lined up.

The Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra is also opening near the Perry Sandhills on April 24. That got pushed back after the big rain a few weeks ago but it is locked in now. Worth keeping an eye on.

Good time to get out and about locally. Enjoy it Wentworth.
