Residing on the Darwin coast has many advantages like, ocean breezes, picturesque coastal landscapes and the recognizable large tides. And nothing can beat a sunset over the water. However, residing here also brings coastal issues like wind, heavy showers and the persistent salty breeze. Humidity and blazing sun.

These issues can cause moisture intrusion, salt erosion and potentially destroy and degrade electrical fittings in and around your home. Coastal towns like Darwin experience significant electrical problems due to severe weather events.

Electrical contractors like Sparks Fly Electrical, can examine likely issues and take precautionary steps to keep electrical fittings in good working order. Regular maintenance is actually quite affordable and this could cut expenses when compared to emergency repairs while also ensuring a safe and more pleasant living space.

The frequency of maintenance depends on many factors like age, condition, and usage. Living on the Northern Territory coast amplifies these variables. Electrical maintenance in coastal cities like Darwin is a crucial aspect of home ownership. Understanding what electrical service and maintenance entails and how frequently to perform it is not as hard as it sounds. Maintenance shouldn’t end up being a reactive and stressful affair. With a bit of fore thought it can be a pleasant experience.

Scheduling small maintenance visits one or twice a year can be surprisingly beneficial and affordable.

Darwin homes have a lot of older electrical systems that benefit from more frequent maintenance.

The benefits of regular electrical maintenance are significant. It enhances safety by identifying and rectifying hazards like faulty wiring and degraded switches and power points, reducing the risk of electric shocks, appliances not working and worst case, fires. Preventive maintenance also reduces downtime and the costs associated with emergency repairs and equipment replacements while ensuring systems comply with current safety standards and regulations. Ultimately, regular maintenance is a cost-effective strategy that ensures the lives of you, and your loved ones, protects property, and ensures the long-term reliability of the electrical infrastructure in your coastal home.

Workplace accidents happen a lot in Darwin and one of the most common home accidents when doing repairs around the home that can cause serious injury, is actually falling from a ladder.

In one recent incident a Darwin home owner fell from their ladder while cleaning their gutter and sustained lower back and arm injury when his ladder slipped and came down. Falls like these are usually serious and can result in significant and long term injuries. Because of the height you are falling from and the fact that most of the time the person involved is not wearing any safety gear.

And let’s not forget that a good portion of Darwin homes are elevated making the issue even more dangerous.

We have all heard the term ‘Darwin Safety Boots’ when a person is performing work in their thongs.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

Injuries like fractured limbs, spinal cord damage, severe brain and skull injury and on the odd occasion death can occur.

Something as simple as installing or removing an antenna, cleaning gutters, or high pressure hosing the roof all carry huge risks because of the height and work platform used to gain access to the roof.

Whenever possible consider hiring a professional to do that small job. It may seem like you can save yourself some money by doing it yourself, but they will carry the right tools, know how, and insurance needed. The long term costs if something should happen to you can be much more significant. Think of your safety first.

If you do decide to go it on your own, try and remember a few things before you do. Like everyone using a ladder is at risk no matter the height. It only takes a 1 meter fall for injury to occur.

Always try and use a proper safety ladder specified for the works undertaken. So steering away from anything on an infomercial is probably for the best.

Don’t reach and extend yourself and limit the weight of anything you might be carrying. Having both arms full, wearing a pair of Dunlop Volley, all while using a worn out ladder you pulled from your Grandfathers shed is probably a recipe for disaster.

Anybody who has lived in Darwin for any length of time knows that crime in Darwin is getting worse. At Sparks Fly Electrical Darwin we can help to make your home a less attractive target. Deter undesirables and help you and your family sleep a bit easier at night. It is never a good time when someone has tried to break in to your home and even worse when they succeed. Having someone invade your privacy makes you feel violated and unsafe for you and your family. Keeping your loved ones safe is always your number one priority and we will make it our priority as well.

Security lighting, sensors, security cameras and bright outdoor lights are a good deterrent against criminals. Installing cameras at your main entrances and main thoroughfares also help deter intruders. Placing camera signs and security signs at gates and driveways help as well. We can advise what might be the best course of action for you. We can supply and install what you need to help you protect your home. Then at night you can worry about your family rather than worrying about intruders.

Here are a few tip and suggestions that might help you….

Install motion sensors to your outdoor lights to deter burglars. Light up dark spots around your home. Make sure all the corners and entrances are well lit, including bushes and shrubs. Install security cameras that can be monitored remotely and if possible, can emit warning sirens when someone enters your property. Communicate with your neighbours about your security concerns and see if you can compliment theirs and vice versa. Consider installing a back to base security system that can alert you and authorities when an issue arises. Leave any visible areas in your house free from clutter. Keep expensive items such as laptops, keys and fobs out of sight or put away when not in use. Also, coin jars and jewelry make attractive smash and grab items.

Following a few simple routines you can significantly reduce the risk of a break-ins.

We can help keep your home, family and belongings safer.

It can be very overwhelming when you think about the amount of tasks you have to complete when thinking about home maintenance. Especially in Darwin’s extreme climate. Jobs that you have left for when the next time a tradesman is in the home and although are not crucial, do put you out. Then when this list does mount up, you end up with a huge list and bill to go with it. Sometimes you can be unsure of what tasks need to be done and what can be left until later and maybe you are unsure of what takes precedence.
What we can be sure of is that general electrical maintenance around your home is crucial to ensure the safety and efficiency of your electrical systems and keep your home running smoothly. Many people wait until things go wrong to do that overdue maintenance but it can also cost a lot more and can be hard to get a tradesman on site at a moment’s notice especially if this failure happens after hours. Doing general electrical maintenance when you are in a good head space and have the time to plan and carry out also gives you the freedom to make appointments and is a lot less stressful. Getting your home maintenance done during the dry season also means that when the wet season comes you are prepared and can sleep a lot easier at night.
Here are some essential tasks to perform regularly and end up being a lot cheaper to sort out before it becomes an emergency
Regularly check for worn-out or damaged outlets and switches, and clean them with a soft cloth to prevent dust build-up. Making sure the mechanics of the power point and switches are in good operation and both sides are working. Light switches can cause issues if not maintained as well.
Having your smoke alarms checked and replaced, or installed if you do not have any yet, is also a good idea.
Having your air conditioners cleaned and checked.
Checking all your pumps and outside power points are in good health. When the wet season comes an old outside power point can cause problems.
This goes for outside lighting too. Making sure your sensors are working correctly and that the lighting you will need come the wet season is operational and water proof.
Ensure that your electrical switchboard is well-ventilated and free from clutter, and the main circuit breaker is functioning correctly. Check your safety switches and make sure the test buttons are functioning properly. Moving anything stored in front of them to allow for easier access during an emergency is something that should be on your mind at all times.
If you have been thinking of a switchboard upgrade, the dry season is the right time to do it.

Believe it or not, but one of the first things astronauts noticed when they first ventured into space in the 1960s was plumes of bushfire smoke. Fires and volcanoes were all reaching high into the atmosphere and stretching much farther than the human imagination had fathomed before. Five decades later, the views from the space craft are not as novel but still just as spectacular. They are brilliant and useful reminders of how events in one place on the planet can have reaching effects far from the source.
Australia’s Northern Territory is in the midst of the dry season. The season lasts from roughly just after Easter to early May to September, and rainfall barely exceeds 10 millimetres (1 centimetre) for the month in August. Though the region sits well within the tropics, the relative afternoon humidity hovers around 30 to 40 percent in August, with maximum temperatures in the low 30’s (Celsius)
While driving in the Northern Territory, it is not uncommon to see fires burning on the roadside or in nearby bushland. These fires are usually ‘prescribed’, controlled burns, which are conducted by the emergency services to control the spread of wildfire. Some fires have been lit by the local aboriginal communities in keeping with tradition. These fires should not be cause for alarm. It is generally when there are houses and people involved or nearby that there is cause for concern.
Bushfire smoke can harm health, causing breathing issues and coughing. It's worse for vulnerable groups like the elderly, young, and those with health conditions. These include asthma, lung conditions, heart and cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and pregnancy. When driving through smoke remember to adjust your air conditioner so that it recycles air in the car rather than coming from outside and keep your windows up and take notice of any instructions from emergency services.
To prevent the risk of bushfire while camping, take note of fire restrictions in the area. Light fires only in fireplaces and fire pits that are provided and never leave a fire unattended. It is always helpful to keep some water close by and be careful to fully extinguish the fire when finished.
There are days that are deemed to pose a high risk of fire, these days may be declared ‘Total Fire Ban’ days. On these days, there is a total ban on lighting fires in the open. These ‘Total Fire Bans’ will be announced in the local media, usually on the radio and in the local press.
Remember that as lovely as the Northern Territory and Darwin landscape is, it can be a risk to your person or others if you do not think ahead and use some caution.

Believe it or not but animals are one of the world’s leading causes of electricity interruptions. Very close behind humans and other factors like weather. Mitigation steps can be just as varying as the assortment of animals themselves. If you have worked in the electrical industry in Darwin or spent some time around electricity you have probably seen all kinds of little critters and creatures that have come to a sudden and violent demise. Preventing wildlife from coming into contact with electricity can help avoid human inconvenience and animal suffering alike. Mice, birds, lizards and skinks and snakes are just a few of the animals in Darwin that can find themselves causing issues inside your switchboards, meter boards and even air conditioners. You have had, or at least know someone, who has dealt with rats and possums in their roof space and caused major problems with the electrical system. We all know that where there are rodents there are snakes and pythons as well.

The main reason we attract these new neighbours in Darwin is a sheltered place to bed down for the night. So if you can make the environment less attractive and more or a challenge to get into you can prevent a lot of the problems associated with this issue.

To get in early and prevent this from happening would be the ideal goal but sometimes it can be hard to spot an issue early. What you can do is identify common signs like bird nests, vermin droppings, and the smell of urine.

Sealing openings like conduit, guttering, switchboards and internal enclosures is a good idea. Leaving out baits and traps for the bigger creatures is also a good option. Cleaning up vegetation around the home, and any trees or shrubs touching it, and cleaning up any food scraps or rubbish is also a good place to start. Compost piles and bins are very good at attracting mice and all the animals that come from that attractive food platter.

Using steel wool from the kitchen pushed into all the small weep holes around your home make it very unattractive for vermin in the first place and you can still keep it ventilated if need be. And there are ultra-sonic and eco-friendly options that you can set and forget until it is time for a battery change.

Work with a local Darwin electrician who is an expert in electrical installations to perform periodic inspections and service to your equipment. There are many options to upgrade your electrical equipment without the huge price tag and this preventative measure can save you thousands of dollars in the future especially when you least expect it. Decorating your home with Christmas lights is a tradition for many over the holiday season. Putting up lights can be intimidating or time-consuming if you don’t properly prepare and we can help you make lighting up your home for the holidays go smoothly and safely. When installing Christmas lights, safety is top priority. Check all light strands for broken or damaged bulbs, cracked plugs, or bare wires before hanging them. Only use extension cords labelled for external use and keep them dry. Avoid hanging lights above busy areas, and don’t overburden power points. Basic precautions will help ensure a beautiful light display doesn’t bring unnecessary risk to your family’s well-being. The type of lights you choose will depend on where and how you plan to display them. Look for LED lights for outdoor use, which are more energy efficient and less fragile than incandescent bulbs. Don’t forget that some lights are designed specifically for indoor trees. Selecting the right lights thoughtfully will result in a safe holiday. With some preparation and a little forethought you can dazzle your neighbors this holiday season. Remember to take all safety precautions when installing Christmas lights to avoid potential electrical hazards. Call Sparks Fly Electrical before you start decorating to check your electrical system is ready and safe. We want your holidays to be memorable for the right reasons. Here is a late night emergency call we received the other night. We got there just in time to prevent a house fire. This could not have been left another hour or two. We had to do our best to get them going in the middle of the night, and also had to come back the next day to finish the rest.

Halloween costumes are classed as toys, so they can ignite quicker and burn faster, posing a risk to wearing them.
It is crucial that you take care with children wearing them around heat sources such as candles and fires.
As we arrive at Halloween, there are plenty of ways to have fun without compromising on safety. Actions such as swapping ordinary candles for LED battery-operated ones or knowing where the nearest exit is at a Halloween party means you can stay safe while enjoying Halloween.
Here are some safety tips.
• Add an extra layer of clothing underneath costumes to protect the skin in the event of a fire incident
• Take extra care when lighting Halloween pumpkins and ensure that no loose clothing is near them at any time (particularly when they are being moved)
• Consider using LED battery-operated candles, these are safer and can be cheaper
• Make sure Halloween decorations are placed well away from naked flames or heat sources and make sure decorations don’t block any escape routes
•Children and pets should never be left alone with candles or any heat sources
• Ensure all candles are extinguished before going to bed
• Ensure your home has at least one working smoke alarm on every level.
Consider fitting additional alarms in other rooms where there are electrical appliances or near sleeping areas
For fire safety advice, or if you do not have working smoke alarms in your property, call Sparks Fly Electrical on 0422574463.
