🔧 Behind the scenes: Building an Outech Off-Grid Power Package for a 17ft JB Caravan

🚐⚡Dan took us into the Outech workshop for a pre-build walkthrough 👀

This JB Gator X 17ft caravan is getting a full off-grid power package ☀️🔋

The plan 👇�
🔋 24V system with 1200W of solar, plus portable solar and dual charging while in tow.�

🔌 Victron system replacing the existing Enerdrive gear, which will be removed from under the bed to make way for valuable storage space.�

🛠️ All-new Victron equipment and Outech Smart Design will go under the café seats.�

📱 A Victron touchscreen will go in the overhead cupboard area, paired with Outech OffGrid Unlimited Remote Support.�
📊 The existing inverter controller and battery monitor will be removed. The RV Electronics tank monitoring will be replaced with a complete system integrated into Victron.

Here Is A System Designed Around Extended Off-Grid Air-Con Use

🔋 Dan walks through a 2019 New Age Caravan - Road Owl upgraded with a 24V 310Ah (7.9kWh) battery system and a 🔌 Victron 3kVA MultiPlus Inverter.
☀️ It also has 1,780W of roof solar, with provision for another 400W of portable solar.

The system was designed around extended off-grid air-con use, clearer monitoring and the appliances the owner wanted to run.

While it’s a challenge to retrofit these systems, the result is a neater, more user-friendly, and fully compliant installation, making future maintenance and usability a breeze!

We’ve now separated the 240V and 12V cabling with a mechanical barrier, using compliant ducting and a ply divider to keep everything safe and up to Australian standards. The AC and DC terminations each have their own dedicated compartments, making the setup much safer and easier to service in the future.

While it’s a challenge to retrofit these systems, the result is a neater, more user-friendly, and fully compliant installation, making future maintenance and usability a breeze!

Zone RV Battery Not Charging 👉Here Is Why

Why Your Caravan Battery Never Hits 100% (and the safety risk behind it)

Zone RV owner brought their caravan in with a common complaint: the battery just wouldn’t charge to 100%.

When we opened it up, the problem was in the connections, not the battery:

🔧 A very loose positive terminal
🔧 Loose connections on the battery post under the seat
🔧 Clear bluing and oxidation on the lugs, which shows heat building at the connection
🔧 A 70mm² bridging cable between the two 200Ah batteries, which is undersized
🔧 A 95mm² inverter cable. That’s the size Enerdrive recommends for the inverter, but the bridging cable doesn’t match it.

The result is poor charging and lost system performance. In the worst case it could cause a fire.

Check your battery connections for tightness as part of regular maintenance, and make sure your cable sizes match the manufacturer’s recommendations.

We’re replacing both cables on this one.
