Another successful month for the QTS team!

A great way to wrap up another busy and successful month at QLD Testing Services — getting the team together for a seafood lunch and a few drinks at Enzo’s on the Beach in Hervey Bay.

We’ve had another huge month across the Wide Bay, and it’s only possible because of the hard work, flexibility and commitment our team puts in every day.

It’s always good to get away from the lab and job sites for an afternoon, enjoy the view and celebrate what we’ve achieved together.

Proud of this crew and what we’re continuing to build at QTS.

PROJECT WIN | Bruce Highway – Central Road to Mary River

QLD Testing Services is proud to announce that we have been engaged by Bellwether Group to provide Construction Materials Testing services for the Bruce Highway (Gympie – Maryborough), Central Road to Mary River project.

The project forms part of the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program and will deliver important safety improvements along this section of the highway, including road widening, wide centre line treatment and audio tactile line marking.

These works are designed to provide greater separation between opposing traffic and improve safety for the thousands of motorists who rely on the Bruce Highway throughout the Wide Bay region.

For QLD Testing Services, securing this project is another significant milestone for our growing Hervey Bay laboratory and an opportunity we're extremely proud of.

Our team will be supporting Bellwether Group throughout construction, providing local, NATA-accredited construction materials testing and technical support to assist with the delivery of the works.

We would like to thank Bellwether Group for the opportunity and for placing their confidence in QLD Testing Services. We look forward to working alongside their project team and contributing to the successful delivery of another important piece of infrastructure for the Wide Bay region.

We’re pleased to welcome Jack Wischusen to the QLD Testing Services team.

Jack brings 8 years of industry experience across both concrete and soil testing, having worked predominantly throughout Central Queensland, along with time spent supporting projects throughout the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Jack began his career with Humes, where he developed a strong foundation in concrete testing and quality control, before expanding into geotechnical and soil testing roles with various companies across the industry.

He currently holds a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques and is continuing to further his knowledge through studies towards a Diploma of Laboratory Operations.

Jack’s practical field experience, technical knowledge, and commitment to quality make him a valuable addition to our growing team, and we look forward to the experience and capability he will bring to projects across the Fraser Coast, Wide Bay and beyond.

Welcome aboard, Jack 👏

The view looks a little different today.

Today, the QLD Testing Services team is on K’gari (Fraser Island) carrying out site investigation works in one of Queensland’s most unique environments.

From remote access to challenging ground conditions, every site investigation plays an important role in providing the geotechnical information needed to support safe and informed design decisions. Our team is equipped to deliver reliable field testing, sampling and logging, no matter where the project takes us.

Whether it’s urban developments, regional infrastructure or remote locations like K’gari, we’re committed to delivering responsive service, quality data and practical solutions for our clients.

Another great day doing what we love in one of Australia’s most spectacular locations.

Why do we perform Emerson Class Testing?

A soil can meet compaction requirements and still become a problem once exposed to water.

The Emerson Class Test (AS 1289.3.8.1) assesses how a soil behaves when immersed in water, helping identify materials that may be susceptible to slaking, dispersion, and erosion.

This information is particularly valuable for:
- Road construction
- Subdivisions
- Embankments
- Dam and levee construction
- General earthworks projects

Identifying dispersive soils early allows engineers and contractors to make informed decisions on material suitability, stabilisation requirements, and long-term asset performance.

At QLD Testing Services, we provide Emerson Class Testing along with a full range of NATA-accredited soil, aggregate and concrete testing services. With rapid turnaround times and practical advice, we’re here to help keep your project moving.

Contact the team to discuss your testing requirements.

29/08/2026

Degradation Factor testing is a critical assessment used in civil construction to determine how aggregates perform under compaction and loading conditions during construction and throughout the life of the pavement.

At QLD Testing Services, we undertake Degradation Factor testing in accordance with TMR and Australian Standard Test Methods to help verify aggregate durability and suitability for use in road and infrastructure projects.

Why is degradation important in construction?
When aggregates degrade excessively, the material can break down during placement, compaction or under traffic loading. This may result in:
• Loss of pavement strength
• Changes to particle size distribution
• Reduced compaction performance
• Rutting, deformation and premature pavement failure
• Increased maintenance and rehabilitation costs

By assessing degradation characteristics before construction, contractors and project teams can gain confidence that the material is capable of maintaining its structural integrity and long-term performance in service.
Degradation Factor testing is particularly important for heavily trafficked pavements and projects requiring compliance with Transport and Main Roads (TMR) specifications.

QLD Testing Services has the capability to conduct Degradation Factor testing from our Hervey Bay laboratory, supporting projects throughout the Fraser Coast, Wide Bay and surrounding regions with prompt turnaround times and experienced technical support.

QLD Testing Services continues to provide nuclear density testing services throughout the Fraser Coast and surrounding regions, supporting civil and infrastructure projects with efficient onsite compaction testing and reporting.

Nuclear density testing, undertaken in accordance with Australian and QTMR standards, remains one of the most effective methods for assessing insitu density and moisture content during earthworks and pavement construction. Rapid onsite results allow contractors and project teams to make informed decisions quickly, helping maintain productivity and compliance throughout construction.

All nuclear density testing activities are carried out under strict radiation safety and compliance procedures. Our director and appointed Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), David Calton, oversees equipment management, transport, storage and operational compliance in accordance with Queensland radiation safety legislation and approved safety procedures.

As a NATA accredited laboratory, QLD Testing Services remains committed to delivering reliable testing, responsive service and practical technical support across projects throughout the Fraser Coast region.
