⚠️ Stay safe when carrying out work in or entering domestic roof spaces!

Always turn off the power at the main switchboard(s) before getting started.

💡 Key safety tips to remember:
🔌 Try flicking a light on and off to check that the power is off.
🧰Use appropriate personal protective equipment and tools.
🚫 Avoid touching cables.
📞 Report damaged wires or cables to the property owner immediately. If you are the property owner, contact a licensed electrical contractor to repair and make the area safe.

⚠️ Don’t try this at home! ⚠️ A property owner from Darra, Brisbane did some work on the electrical wiring of his backyard shed, but he used a garden hose to cover the wires, leaving some of them dangerously exposed.

This was reported to the Electrical Safety Office and the property owner was fined $400.

When it comes to electrical work, don’t DIY. It’s not worth the risk! Protect your loved ones and always use a licensed electrician www.electricalsafety.qld.gov.au/find-a-licensed-electrician

⚠️ New roof space safety laws – what you need to know! ⚠️

Under most circumstances, you cannot enter or work in a domestic roof space unless the electrical installations are de-energised. This means all power must be turned off at the main switchboard(s) before entry.⚡🔌

In rare cases where work must be done in an energised roof space, strict safety requirements apply. If you’re conducting a business or undertaking, you must:

✔️ Complete and keep a risk assessment.
✔️ Ensure risks are reduced as low as reasonably practicable.
✔️ Confirm the work can be done safely.
✔️ Prepare, follow, and keep a safety statement for the work.

Time to test!

📅You should test your safety switches every three months!

Whether you're renting or own your home, it's a good idea to have safety switches installed on all circuits. They help protect you from electric shocks in case there's a fault with your electrical wiring or equipment, giving you peace of mind.

Pop a reminder in your calendar and make it part of your safety routine.

For more information on testing your safety switches, check out our website: https://www.electricalsafety.qld.gov.au/electrical-safety-home/safety-switches

⚠️ Strengthening electrical safety in Queensland’s pools, spas and baths

From 1 April 2025, water equipment such as extra low voltage pool lights and pumps will be included as prescribed electrical equipment under Queensland’s electrical safety framework.

This means that:
✅ Only licensed electricians can perform electrical work involving water equipment.
✅ Manufacturers, suppliers, and installers must be familiar with and comply with their duties.
✅ Unsafe water equipment may be recalled.

Water + electricity = a deadly mix

Remember to keep pools, spas and baths safe.

📢 Make sure you understand your responsibilities. Learn more about the requirements by visiting https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/safety-and-prevention/hazards/electricity/electrical-products-and-equipment/prescribed-electrical-equipment
