🏗️ **The Future of Building: High-Performance, Sustainable & Prefabricated Housing**

We're excited to be speaking at the upcoming **Master Builders Association NSW – Shoalhaven Division Information Night** on Wednesday, 21 October in Nowra!

Our founder and Managing Director, Klaus Herrmann, will share how we're combining engineering, Passive House principles and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to rethink the way we build homes.

We'll explore:

🌱 **Beyond minimum standards** – Creating healthier, more comfortable and energy-efficient homes with a lower carbon footprint.

🏭 **Prefabrication & MMC** – How precision factory manufacturing can improve quality, productivity and construction efficiency.

🏡 **Passive House principles** – Designing buildings that deliver exceptional thermal comfort and performance.

🔧 **Scaling sustainable construction** – Turning innovative engineering and design into practical, factory-built housing solutions.

We're looking forward to exchanging ideas with fellow builders and industry professionals about where our industry is heading.

From timber to wall panel in under 30 seconds ⏱️ (OK, it took the team a bit longer than that 😉)

This is framing day in our factory in the Snowy Mountains. Australian Made Campaign
Every panel is built flat on our framing table, where it's square, dry and out of the weather:

📐 The frame goes together from the shop drawings, with every stud, opening and window position set out before the first screw goes in
🪵 LVL around the edges and openings, I-joists inside: strong, straight and room for deep insulation
🧱 The sheathing goes on and becomes the bracing and the airtight layer, one of the most important details in a high-performance building

Building it in the factory means a panel that's square and checked before it ever leaves the shed. On site, it goes up in days, not weeks.

Next step: the butterfly table flips the whole panel over so we can insulate it from the other side. That timelapse is coming next 👀

Big news from the Snowy Mountains! 🏔️

Our Eco Wall and Roof Panel System has been shortlisted for the 2026 Sustainability Awards (Green Building Material/Product category).

👉 Have a look at our entry: https://www.sustainablebuildingawards.com.au/green-building-material-product-2026/alpine-passivhaus-eco-wall-and-roof-structural-panel-system/

So what's inside our walls?

🌲 Timber frame and Australian plywood
🪵 60 mm wood fibre board on the outside
♻️ Insulation made from waste: wood fibre from sawmill offcuts, or cellulose made in Melbourne from recycled newspaper
☀️ All built in our off-grid, solar-powered factory

Every square metre of wall stores around 70 kg of CO₂, more than it took to make it. 🌍

And because the wall can breathe and dry out, there's no condensation and no mould. That means healthier air inside, and a house that lasts.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us. Fingers crossed for the gala on 12 November! 🤞

Meet Jack Harmer 👋

Jack is one of our apprentices at Alpine PassivHaus and part of the next generation of tradespeople coming through the industry.

He’s gaining hands-on experience in prefabrication, modern methods of construction and high-performance building — learning not just how to build, but why we build the way we do.

We’re proud of our team and proud to support apprentices who are eager to learn and grow.

Have a listen to Jack in the video.

TIMBER SHED BUILD | PART 3 – BLOCKING & BRACING 🪵

With the portal frames and infill framing up, it’s time to lock the structure together.

Blocking and bracing tie the timber structure together and provide the strength and stiffness needed to withstand the high winds we regularly experience here in the Snowy Mountains, as well as alpine snow loads.

One of the big advantages of timber construction is its flexibility. Insulation, services, windows and internal linings can all be easily integrated into the existing timber framing.

That makes it easy to add an office or workshop, or even convert the shed into a shed home later.

Strong, adaptable and designed for our alpine conditions.

🏡 WHAT DOES PASSIVE HOUSE REALLY MEAN?

Sometimes, a quick look at the weather station tells the story better than anything else.

🌡️ Outside: 3.3°C here in the Snowy Mountains
🏠 Inside: 21.6°C
🔥 Heating: OFF

That’s Passive House in action.

By combining passive solar gain, excellent insulation, high-performance windows, airtight construction, thermal-bridge-free detailing and heat-recovery ventilation, the building needs very little energy to stay comfortable.

And it’s not just about cold climates. The same principles work the other way around in hot climates — keeping unwanted heat outside and dramatically reducing the energy needed for cooling.

A well-designed Passive House can use around 90% less heating and cooling energy than a typical existing building.

For us, that’s what good building design should deliver: year-round comfort with incredibly low energy demand.

💪 GRATEFUL FOR A GREAT TEAM – HARD YAKKA TODAY! 🇩🇪➡️🇦🇺

A big day at Alpine PassivHaus today, unloading a 40 ft high-cube container packed full of materials from Germany.

Inside were the last of the triple-glazed timber-aluminium windows for our Jindabyne Passive House project, pallets of wood-fibre insulation and insulation battens — and a few other goodies.

Getting everything out was definitely a tight operation — at one point we had only around 15 mm clearance to work with. 😅 But with some careful manoeuvring and a great team effort, everything came out safely.

So why go to all the effort of importing these materials from Germany?

🪟 triple-glazed timber-aluminium windows combine the warmth and natural finish of timber internally with a durable, weather-resistant aluminium exterior. The high-performance triple glazing and thermally efficient frames provide excellent thermal and acoustic performance — a real advantage not only in cold climates, but also in hot climates and noisy urban environments, where controlling heat transfer, external noise and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment can make a huge difference.

🌲 wood-fibre insulation is a material we are particularly passionate about. It takes sawmill waste and turns them into a high-performance insulation product — making valuable use of an existing material stream while the wood fibre continues to store biogenic carbon for the life of the product.

And it performs. Along with excellent winter insulation, its high heat-storage capacity provides excellent summer heat protection. It is also vapour-open, helps regulate moisture and provides very good acoustic performance.

For us, that combination of making better use of timber-industry waste, storing carbon and achieving excellent building performance makes it well worth the effort of bringing these materials all the way from Germany.

A long day and plenty of hard yakka — but very satisfying to see another container safely unloaded and these materials finally here. 🙌

Big thanks to the team for getting it done!

TIMBER SHED BUILD | PART 2 – GOING VERTICAL 🪵

Following on from Part 1, our 100 m² timber-framed shed is really starting to take shape.

After assembling the engineered timber portal frames flat on the slab, it’s time to go vertical.

The completed portal frames are lifted into position and secured, quickly forming the main structure of the shed. Next, the vertical timber wall infills are installed between the portals.

The infill members are prefabricated and CNC-cut in the factory, incorporating window and door openings, sills and other details before they arrive on site.

Some of the advantages of this timber system:

• Fast and accurate er****on
• Precision CNC prefabrication
• Renewable, lower-carbon structure
• Less thermal bridging
• Less expansion & contraction noise
• Easy to insulate and line
• Easy to add or modify openings
• Adaptable for future use

That adaptability is one of the great advantages of building the structure in timber. What starts as a simple shed can be designed from the beginning to make a future conversion into an insulated workshop, studio or shed home much easier.

Designed for N3 wind classification and snow loading, it’s a serious timber structure built for Snowy Mountains conditions.
