New Project Underway | Wollombi Road Upgrade, Cessnock

Central Infrastructure Sydney has commenced works on the Wollombi Road Upgrade, with our crews getting started on excavation and underground conduit installation for the new traffic signal infrastructure.

This major upgrade will improve traffic flow, road safety and pedestrian access, supporting the growing communities of Cessnock and Bellbird.

The accompanying concept images show the planned signalised intersections at Mount View Road and Darwin Street, alongside photos of our team’s early progress on site.

We’re proud to contribute our traffic signal expertise to this important infrastructure project and look forward to sharing more updates as works progress.

As part of our routine safety requirements, CIS staff complete regular respirator fit testing for work involving potential exposure to silica dust.

Each team member is individually tested to confirm their respirator fits correctly and receives guidance on its proper use, inspection and maintenance.

Fit-tested respiratory protection is one part of our silica control measures, together with dust suppression, extraction and safe work procedures.

SCATS MYTH BUSTER: It’s more than just a timer.

There’s a common misconception that traffic signals simply operate on fixed timers. In reality, Sydney’s SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System) is continuously responding to what’s happening on the road.

Using real-time traffic data, SCATS analyses current conditions and adjusts signal timings to help improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and minimise delays.

With 4,300+ intersections across NSW managed through SCATS, it plays an important role in keeping our road network moving safely and efficiently.

Flood resilience starts with smart design!

In flood-prone areas, protecting critical infrastructure like traffic signal controllers is essential for maintaining safety and minimising downtime.
This installation highlights a simple but highly effective approach: elevating the controller cabinets above ground level. By raising the units on a concrete plinth, we significantly reduce the risk of water ingress during heavy rainfall or flooding events.

It’s also a great example of the kind of technical detail in our work that often goes unnoticed. Small design choices like this play a critical role behind the scenes, and we’re always looking for ways to help people better understand the engineering that keeps our transport networks running.
