Most people spend more time looking at their garden than they do actually sitting in it.

Through the kitchen window while the kettle boils. From the dining table. The hallway glimpse they barely register on the way out the door.

That view is doing something all day, every day whether you're thinking about it or not.

That has always felt close to good design. The unseen work below the surface. The moment something clicks. The way colour, texture and light can alter how a place is felt.

Good design should still make sense years down the track - not just on the day it's finished.

It's not just about how a space looks when everything is brand new. It's about how materials hold up. How the planting fills in. How the space feels once it's actually been lived in for a while.

Year five should be better than day one.

I've been designing outdoor spaces for 22 years and the first site visit is still the part I look forward to most.

Every space has something in it a logic to how it sits on the block, the way light moves through it in the afternoon, the things that are quietly making it harder to love than it should be.

Reading that properly before a single line gets drawn, is what makes the difference between a design that belongs somewhere and one that was just dropped in.

I started BULB to bring that same care to every kind of project. Not just the big ones.

There's a space somewhere in Victoria that could be doing a lot more for you than it is.

Maybe it's a garden that's always felt almost finished. Maybe it's a backyard you rarely go into, even though you'd like to. Maybe it's just a corner that's always been what it is, and you've stopped expecting it to be anything else.

That's where we start.

You spend a lot more time looking at your garden than you spend being in it.
Through the kitchen window while the kettle boils. Past the back door on the way to the laundry. The hallway glimpse you barely register.

None of these are the moments you picture when you imagine your ideal outdoor space but they're probably the most frequent contact you have with it across the course of a normal week.

Which is why every project we do starts from inside the house, looking out. The view from the kitchen window matters as much as anything else. Probably more.

Most gardens look good in October. October does the work for you.

The dahlias are out, everything's had its flush of growth, the whole thing looks abundant without much effort. It's the other eleven months that are the real test of whether a garden's been properly designed. The cold mornings in June when you look outside and there's still something worth looking at, the January evenings when the light is doing something extraordinary and you find yourself wanting to be out there.

We design for all 12 months. The ones that photograph well and the ones that don't.

There's isn’t a name for what a well-designed garden does to you when you walk into it.

There probably should be. That moment when something in you just settles before you've decided to relax, before you've noticed why. You're just there, and it's enough.

We've spent 22 years trying to design toward that moment.
