Some before and after shots of a garden completed several years ago! Great to see how this native inspired garden has grown and come together from some humble beginnings. A seeded lawn once properly tended to can have an amazing effect while the native shrubs have come into their own and shaped up nicely for an aesthetic and useable space.

🪻Hardenbergia violacea, more commonly known as the Purple Coral Pea or Native Sarsaparilla, is a hardy Australian climber that bursts into life with sprays of vivid purple flowers from late winter through spring. A member of the pea family, it grows as a twining climber or scrambling shrub, often reaching up to two metres in length. Its dark green, leathery leaves provide a striking contrast to the dense clusters of pea-shaped blooms, which can number twenty to forty in a single spray. This resilient native thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates light frosts, and flourishes in both full sun and semi-shade, making it a favourite among gardeners who want a splash of colour with minimal fuss.

✨ Hardenbergia violacea is affectionately nicknamed the “Happy Wanderer” because of its free-spirited climbing habit and cheerful display of purple or even white blossoms. It’s a plant that truly lives up to its name, wandering across fences, trellises, and garden beds while spreading joy wherever it grows.

🌺 Aloe hybrida ‘Always Red’ is a dazzling hybrid succulent celebrated for its relentless bloom power. This small to medium-sized clumping aloe produces vivid blood-red flower spears for up to 9 months of the year, spanning autumn, winter, and spring. Its green, fleshy foliage forms a slow-growing groundcover, making it ideal for mass plantings or container displays. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, adding bold color to any garden.

🎉 Fun fact: ‘Always Red’ is nicknamed The Flower Factory because of its unmatched flowering stamina—some plants have been known to bloom for nearly 10 months straight, attracting birds and butterflies like a botanical magnet.

🌿 Acacia podalyriifolia, commonly known as Pearl Acacia or Queensland Silver Wattle, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree native to southeastern Queensland. With its silvery-grey phyllodes (leaf-like stems) and vibrant yellow puffball flowers, it brings a luminous charm to gardens from late winter to early spring. It’s prized for screening, erosion control, and ornamental flair, thriving in full sun and well-drained soils.

🌿 Bergenia cordifolia, also known as Heartleaf Bergenia or Elephant’s Ears, is a hardy evergreen perennial native to Siberia. It’s beloved for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and clusters of deep-pink flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring atop thick red stems. The foliage turns a striking purplish-bronze in winter, offering year-round visual interest—making it a favorite for ground cover in cottage gardens, borders, and rockeries.

🎉 Fun fact: When you rub its leathery leaves together, they make a squeaky sound—earning it the quirky nickname “Pigsqueak”.

🌀 Blue Chalk Sticks (Senecio serpens) is a low-growing succulent native to South Africa, prized for its powdery blue, finger-like foliage that adds a cool-toned contrast to gardens and containers. Its trailing habit and drought tolerance make it a favorite for coastal landscapes, rock gardens, and sunny borders across Australia.

✨ Fun fact: When exposed to intense sunlight, the tips of Blue Chalk Sticks can blush purple, nature’s way of adding a pop of colour to its own palette!

Correas are charming, evergreen shrubs native to Australia, prized for their delicate, bell-shaped flowers and hardy nature. Ranging from low groundcovers to medium-sized shrubs, they thrive in coastal and temperate climates, making them a favorite in native gardens. With blooms in hues from soft white to vibrant pinks and reds, correas not only add year-round color but also attract nectar-loving birds. Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established, they’re ideal for borders, pots, or as informal hedges—perfect for gardeners seeking beauty with resilience.

FUN FACT: The Chefs Hat Correa is one of my favourite shrubs. If you get the chance to crush up one of the hat shaped flowers it will release an aroma that smells of bubblegum!

Eucalyptus flowers are a distinctive feature of the iconic Australian trees, bursting forth in clusters of delicate filaments that resemble fluffy pom-poms. Unlike most flowers, eucalyptus buds are encased in a tough, protective cap—called an operculum—which pops off as the bloom emerges. These nectar-rich blossoms attract birds, bees, and even possums, playing a vital role in Australia’s ecosystems.

Fun fact: Unlike typical flowers with petals, eucalyptus blossoms are made entirely of stamens—those delicate, pollen-coated filaments. This unique structure gives them their fluffy, brush-like appearance.
