🪻Hardenbergia violacea, more commonly known as the Purple Coral Pea or Native Sarsaparilla, is a hardy Australian climber that bursts into life with sprays of vivid purple flowers from late winter through spring. A member of the pea family, it grows as a twining climber or scrambling shrub, often reaching up to two metres in length. Its dark green, leathery leaves provide a striking contrast to the dense clusters of pea-shaped blooms, which can number twenty to forty in a single spray. This resilient native thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates light frosts, and flourishes in both full sun and semi-shade, making it a favourite among gardeners who want a splash of colour with minimal fuss.
✨ Hardenbergia violacea is affectionately nicknamed the “Happy Wanderer” because of its free-spirited climbing habit and cheerful display of purple or even white blossoms. It’s a plant that truly lives up to its name, wandering across fences, trellises, and garden beds while spreading joy wherever it grows.
