Lost power? Before you start resetting switches, run through this quick checklist.

Most outages come down to something simple — a tripped RCD, a blown fuse, or an outage across the whole street. A few things worth knowing:

- Check your switchboard first. A tripped safety switch (RCD) or blown fuse is the most common cause.
- Ask a neighbour if their power's out too. It might not be your home at all.
- Switch off sensitive appliances at the wall so they're not exposed to a surge when power comes back on.
- Keep the fridge and freezer shut to hold the cold in.
- If a switch keeps tripping, stop resetting it and get it looked at. A recurring trip is usually a sign of a fault, not a fluke.

Save this post so it's handy next time the lights go out — and if that switch won't stay on, give us a call. We'll track down the fault and fix it properly.

Buying electrical products online can be tempting, especially when the price is significantly cheaper than what you’d pay through a reputable electrical supplier. But when it comes to electrical equipment, cheap doesn’t always mean good value.

Poor-quality or non-compliant electrical fittings can potentially lead to:

🔥 Overheating and fire
⚡ Electric shock
💥 Premature failure or damage to other equipment
🏠 Damage to your property
❌ Products that don’t meet Australian safety requirements

The biggest concern is that a product can look perfectly legitimate while still being poorly manufactured, incorrectly rated, or not compliant for use in Australia.

As electrical contractors, we see the importance of using quality, compliant products and installing them correctly.

If you’re unsure about an electrical fitting you’ve purchased online, don’t take the risk — ask a licensed electrician to check it before installation.

A few dollars saved isn’t worth putting your home, business or family at risk.

Almost three in four electrical products purchased online fail to meet Australian safety standards.

A great example of how a switchboard can be improved with a few key upgrades.

Adding individual RCBO protection provides enhanced safety by giving each circuit its own protection, while updating and redoing switchboard labelling helps improve circuit identification, fault finding, and future maintenance.

A tidy, clearly labelled switchboard isn’t just about appearance — it helps create a safer, more organised electrical installation.

Considering a switchboard upgrade or want to improve the safety of your home or business electrical system?

We recently attended a job where persistent flickering lights led us to a much bigger issue. After fault-finding, we discovered deteriorated cable insulation, creating an intermittent fault and a potential safety risk.

Flickering lights can be caused by:
• Loose electrical connections
• Damaged or ageing wiring
• Faulty switches or fittings
• Overloaded circuits

If your lights are flickering, don’t ignore it. While some causes are minor, others can indicate hidden electrical faults that should be investigated before they become a bigger problem.

At Kivalo Electrical, we provide thorough fault finding to identify the cause and carry out safe, lasting repairs.

RCD Safety Reminder from Kivalo Electrical

An important reminder about the regular testing of Residual Current Devices (RCDs).

RCDs are a vital safety device designed to cut power in milliseconds if a fault is detected, helping protect people from electric shock and serious injury. But they can only do their job if they’re working correctly.

Take a moment to:
✔ Press the TEST button on your RCDs regularly
✔ Confirm the power switches off immediately
✔ Reset once testing is complete
✔ Contact a licensed electrician if anything doesn’t operate as expected

It only takes seconds to test, but it can make a life-saving difference.

Stay safe. Stay compliant.

A reminder that not all electrical faults trip circuit protection immediately!

This outdoor socket and plug were found severely heat damaged due to a poor connection, resulting in arcing and overheating over time. what started as a small issue eventually led to melted components and a potential fire hazard.

Regular inspections of outdoor electrical equipment are especially important, as moisture, corrosion, UV exposure and wear can all contribute to connection failures.

If you notice discolouration burning smells, intermittent operation, or heat around plugs and sockets, have them checked by a licensed electrician as soon as possible.
