Noongar 6 Seasons Gardens

Makuru - Season of fertility (June - July)

The Noongar Season of Makuru is associated with
shades of blue, symbolising its connection to rain and colder weather.

This season marks the coldest and wettest period in the Southwest. Traditionally, it signalled a time for communities to move inland from the coast, as westerly and southerly winds brought cold temperatures, rains, and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

Makuru is depicted through a rich tapestry of blues and purples, symbolising the emergence of seasonal flowers and the profound significance of this time in the Noongar calendar. The garden’s design incorporates a winding path, reminiscent of the Noongar people’s traditional movement inland from the coast during Makuru.

Noongar 6 Seasons Gardens

Djeran - Season of adulthood (April - May)

The Noongar Season Djeran is linked to the colour green, signifying the start of cooler weather.

Traditionally, Djeran is a time for gathering foods such as bayu seeds stored from the previous djiriji (Zamia Palm) season, along with yanget (rush) bulbs, bardi grubs, freshwater fish, kooyar (frogs), yakaarn (turtles), and quenda (Southern brown bandicoot). It’s customary during this period to reinforce and waterproof mia-mias (shelters) using materials like bibool (paperbark), mindarie (balga fronds), and wollung (running postman).

In this garden bed, we’ve selected a variety of green plants that evoke the cooler weather of Djeran and signify renewal. Among them, striking red flowers such as the red flowering gum provide an abundance of blooms that characterise this time of year. The riverbed represents a wetland area and mirrors the season’s shift from hot days to cooler nights, and occasional rain, providing a tangible representation of seasonal change.

Noongar 6 Seasons Gardens

Bunuru - Season of the adolescence (February - March)

During the Noongar Season of Bunuru, symbolised by the colour orange, temperatures soar as rain becomes scarce.

Historically, this period prompted the Noongar people to migrate towards the coast, rivers, and estuaries, where their diet shifted to include abundant freshwater foods and seafood. Fish, crab, and mussels became staples, particularly as tailor and mullet thrived in shallow waters. Additionally, marron and gilgies were harvested from the wetlands during this time.

The garden bed is designed to embody the essence of this season with orange flowers which serve as a visual representation of the intense heat, the defining characteristic of this time of year.

A dry riverbed is incorporated into the garden to symbolise the arid conditions prevalent during Bunuru, highlighting the minimal rainfall and dry environment. This feature provides a tactile reminder of the harsh, sun-scorched landscape typical of this season.

Noongar 6 Seasons Gardens

Birak - Season of the young (December - January)

The Noongar season of Birak is symbolised by the colour red, representing heat, the sun and Karla (fire). During Birak the rain subsides, and warm weather firmly takes hold. The afternoons are refreshed by cooling sea breezes from the Southwest.

Traditionally, Birak is known as the fire season. The consistent pattern of easterly winds in the morning and sea breezes in the afternoon create ideal conditions for controlled burning the land in mosaic patterns. The Noongar people practiced this to reduce fuel loads, enhance grazing pastures for animals, aid seed germination, and facilitate easier movement across the landscape.

The garden bed showcases a torched log with a mosaic pattern, surrounded by an abundance of red flowering plants. This theme is further enhanced by a substrate of red gravel. Included in the garden bed is Coastal Rosemary, representing the time when Noongar people would gather and move towards the coast, where the ocean offered plentiful fresh food.

Be immersed at Lightscape through light, sound, and… scent? 👃

As the Lightscape trail passes through our Grevillea and Hakea Garden, you’ll notice the sweetly scented white flowers of the Grevillea triloba, nestled amongst ‘A Distant Beautiful Country’.

Created as part of a community project run by Roy Hill at Strelley Community School, the columns of art celebrate the children’s interpretation of their cultural heritage and connection to country.

In the wild, the Grevillea triloba can be found on and near the coast between Geraldton and Murchison River, with its distinctive grey-green, three-lobed leaves and fragrant flowers that make this plant much-loved by native insects and bees.

Catch this captivating and colourful combination during Lightscape for a full sensory experience! Lightscape runs Wednesday - Sunday until 28 July, with additional school holiday dates.

Tickets on sale now via Ticketek 👉 https://bit.ly/48pCiUu

Lightscape is powered by City of Perth - City of Light and supported by Roy Hill.
