Recently wrapped up a Cinema room lighting upgrade where the client had a tight budget and the existing structure needed to stay exactly as it was.
Rather than ripping everything out, we retrofitted new stair lighting into the existing steps. We custom designed mounting plates and had them made up by a local metal fabricator, then fixed LED strip housings in place to hold the lighting neatly to finish it off properly. We also tracked down transformers small enough to retrofit into the existing space without any structural changes.
To finish the job off, all the old ceiling halogen lights were replaced with black trim LED downlights, all installed on dimmers to give the room proper control and atmosphere.
A good example of how you can still get a clean, modern result without overcomplicating things or blowing the budget.
