Recently PBSM Group was urgently requested to assist on a project in Port Hedland WA. The request came from a previous working relationship. True to PBSM Group’s commitment to our customers we quickly changed our schedule to accommodate the urgent request. Being an east coast based company there was obviously a few hurdles to overcome and paperwork to get in place before mobilising. With the highly professional assistance of our client, from point of request to setting foot onsite took only 6 days.

PBSM Group will be undertaking a QA/QC & Commissioning role for the next month to get this stockpile expansion project completed on time. We are excited to be a part of this project and are proud to be the first point of call for our client.

This is proof of the commitment we have to our clients and that we aim to build long term relationships.

A reminder to not just test before you touch but to have a good look at where you are putting your hands when searching through cable trays. This beauty was found stowed away underneath a cable tray mounted to a conveyor.

The jbox looked to be old and redundant but upon investigation, proved to be live with 110V and was still in active use for the conveyor belts under speed monitoring control circuit.

The jbox looked to be installed professionally at one point in time but due to a harsh environment it is clearly due for a replacement.

Stay safe everyone!

Today while bringing a bulk material handling machine online for some further testing, we encountered an issue with the 6.6kV feeder.

No faults indicated on the relay, we could hear the actuator engaging from the remote switching station but yet the breaker wouldn’t close.

After a short investigation it was soon clear what the problem was. An auxiliary switch used to confirm that the spring is under full tension had failed as you can see from the photos. The switch stopped power getting to the undervolt coil, hence not allowing the breaker to close. New part ordered and on the way for a cheap fix of a very expensive item.

PBSM Group has been engaged to perform an electrical audit and coordinate necessary repairs to bring an old stacker and bridge reclaimer back online. As you can see from the photos, there is obvious attention required in various spots to make the machines safe to operate. Despite how they may look, electrically the machines are in reasonably good condition. Performing an in depth AS3000 audit, has revealed where the attention is required most quite quickly. Now time to work forward and find suitable solutions for our client and get these machines operational.

To start off the year with a challenge, we installed and fitted off the supplies and motor tails to the VBI/LCS of the motor in our previous post.

An experience starting to become all to common is being given free issue equipment for projects that satisfies AS61439 in regards to load ratings, heat dissipation, IP etc. However with the cable selection being more towards the safe side in harsh environments to overcome the worst case scenarios for load, voltage drop and cable derating factors, electricians are faced with very challenging terminations like this.

An easy solution to this problem is a quick cross check of the dimensions of the board being selected, the latest revision of the cable schedule to confirm cable sizes and review the cable manufacturer’s specifications on bending radius. When multiple cables are being run in parallel, also checking the dimensions of the cable against the dimensions of the cable zones is also very beneficial.

With these checks complete you can confidently select a board that satisfies Australian Standards and doesn’t cause headaches during installation. An ongoing benefit is ease of regular statutory maintenance and greatly reduced downtime in a breakdown scenario if it occurs.

Tell us what you think, do you agree? Did we miss something that would make the task easier? We want to hear your opinion.
