The Urban Garden Co Designing landscapes across Sydney

Concept design for a recent project in Bayview.

I worked with existing levels as much as possible to minimize the amount of excavation required. This block has limited access, so labour will be done by people power instead of machinery.
Floating walkways through the planting maintains a natural relaxed feel, which links the garden to the borrowed landscape of the nature reserve.

Resilient materials will mean this garden lasts long into the future no matter what nature throws at it.

Luxury in landscaping isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about how intentionally every element is chosen.

We’ve all seen gardens that look high end but don’t feel inviting. The real luxury? Spaces that are both beautiful and incredibly liveable.

True outdoor luxury looks like:
- A garden that invites you to slow down, not just admire from afar
- Natural materials that grow more beautiful with time
- Design that reflects how you want to feel in the space, calm, connected and at ease

I believe a well-designed garden isn’t just a feature it’s a feeling.

I create outdoor spaces that function beautifully and feel like an extension of your lifestyle, not just your floor plan. Because a garden that’s only nice to look at is a missed opportunity.

Did you notice the first stepping stone from the front entrance is the same shape as the arch above it?

It’s something that’s only completely obvious from this angle, but our minds still pick up on those subtle details.

It’s these almost unnoticeable things that make everything feel connected, even if you can’t immediately explain why. They help the house and garden read as one.

It’s the small things our subconscious notices. It’s taking in far more than we realise.

As soon as possible! Once you have approved the footprint of your new home or renovation, pass your architectural plans on to your landscape designer. The earlier you can get their input the more opportunity there is to plan and we all know that better planning during the building process usually equates to cost saving or less money wasted!

There are a lot of variables when it comes to landscaping, you are of course dealing with nature, so the more time you give your designer to work through any problem solving that might be required the better.

I’m Ali, a Landscape Designer who helps homeowners and builders realise elegant, functional landscapes through well-resolved, construction-ready design.

This garden is a mix of soft plantings and strong, solid materials. It's the combination of the two that gives it a feeling of cosiness and comfort. A super spacious block with home gym, plunge pool, outdoor shower, productive garden, mini orchard and the all important fire pit for cold days and nights.

Are you dreaming of a cosy firepit space for you and your loved ones? Winter is on it's way!

Building a new home? Here’s 3 key decisions you should make before your house slab gets poured....

No 1. Site levels and drainage - Consider grading the site, building retaining walls at the rear of the property and managing stormwater before constructions starts. Access for larger machinery used for excavation and moving materials to the back of the site can save time/money later.

No 2. Services and connections - Allowing for services and conduits
can avoid messy (and expensive) digging later.

No 3. Side access and Utilities - Often forgotten, the less glamorous outdoor elements like clotheslines and rubbish bins still need a designated space, this keeps your landscape functional and looking good. Make sure side access paths are wide enough for both storage and easy pedestrian access.

The brief for this project at Macmasters Beach was to transform the steep block to create some usable spaces. The only option for a secondary entertaining space was uphill from the house.

To make the effort worthwhile, the firepit area is strategically positioned at the highest point which means uninterrupted ocean views over the house.

Wabi sabi is one of those quiet design philosophies I always come back to.

It’s about embracing imperfection, working with what’s already there and designing in a way that allows a space to evolve over time.

That’s at the heart of how I approach garden design.

Not every edge needs to be sharp. Not everything has to feel brand new. Some of the most beautiful moments in a garden come from what softens, shifts or grows in unexpectedly.

I’m Ali, a Landscape Designer who works closely with you to shape your vision into a clear, build-ready design that reflects your home and lifestyle.
