It's probably one of the least exciting pieces of gardening advice you'll ever hear.
It's also one of the most important.

Before choosing a plant because you love how it looks, consider:
☀️ How much sun will it get?
💧 How wet or dry is the soil?
🌿 How big will it actually become?
🏡 What do you need it to do?
✂️ How much maintenance do you want?

A plant that's brilliant in one garden can struggle in another.

IT'S ALL IN THE EDGES. 👌🌱

You can mow an entire lawn beautifully...

But there's something about a crisp edge that makes the whole thing look finished.

Paths, garden beds, driveways and fences - taking care of the edges is one of those little details that can make a surprisingly big difference to the overall appearance of a garden.

And yes.

We find a perfectly finished lawn edge considerably more satisfying than we probably should. 😂

NATIVE PLANT SPOTLIGHT 🌺

Can we talk about Grevilleas for a minute?

Because choosing a Grevillea is a bit like saying you want a plant. 😂

There's an enormous range of forms, colours and sizes available.

Some of our smaller favourites include:
🌺 Grevillea 'Pink Pixie' - compact with beautiful pink flowers
🌺 Grevillea 'Winter Delight' - low-growing with gorgeous red and cream flowers
🌿 Grevillea lanigera 'Mt Tamboritha' - a lovely spreading groundcover

They're brilliant for adding colour and texture without necessarily introducing large shrubs - and those flowers are rather popular with our feathered garden visitors too.

SPRING GROWTH HAS ARRIVED ✂️🌿

Plants are putting on fresh growth, hedges are moving again and some gardens seem capable of becoming jungles approximately five minutes after we've left. 😂

Spring is a great time to tidy plenty of garden plants - but it's worth remembering that not everything should be pruned the same way or at the same time.

Before reaching for the secateurs, consider what the plant is, when it flowers and whether you're about to remove this season's buds.

Sometimes a good prune is exactly what a plant needs.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is leave it alone.

Knowing the difference matters. 🌿

SHORTER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER 🌱

It's tempting to give the lawn an extra-short cut so you can leave it longer before mowing again.

But your lawn may have other ideas. 😂

Cutting too much off at once can stress the grass and leave it more vulnerable as the weather gets warmer.

As spring growth picks up, regular mowing at an appropriate height is generally much kinder to your lawn than occasionally giving it a severe haircut.

The aim isn't simply a short lawn.

It's a healthy lawn that looks great too. 🌿

NATIVE PLANT SPOTLIGHT 🌿

If you've been following us for a while, you might have noticed we have a bit of a thing for Westringia 'Blue Gem'.

And for good reason.

This compact Australian native has beautiful grey-green foliage and lovely blue-purple flowers, and its naturally dense growth makes it incredibly useful in garden design.

We love using it for:
