🌳 Exciting Habitat Creation Project West of Boonah! 🌳

Arbour Australis Consulting is excited to be involved in assessing another 500-hectare property dedicated to environmental offset, located west of Boonah. We’re exploring the potential for creating artificial hollows to enhance habitat for native wildlife, including species such as the Greater Glider.

It was a fantastic few days working on-site — the weather was perfect, and we couldn't be more excited about the possibilities this land holds for enhancing biodiversity. This project represents a meaningful step toward combining conservation efforts with innovative habitat solutions.

Stay tuned for updates as we continue to evaluate the best options for creating vital habitat and supporting our native ecosystems!

It was great to work with a dedicated team on this project.

🌿 Exciting Milestone Achieved! 🌿

We’re thrilled to share that our recent Habitat Hollow Project has successfully installed 100 artificial hollows into standing trees — an enriching and impactful journey.

This initiative is about more than just numbers; it’s about making a tangible difference for endangered wildlife, such as the Greater Glider, which relies on large tree hollows for shelter and breeding. By carefully replicating natural hollows, we’re accelerating the development of natural hollows and helping to restore vital habitats and support biodiversity close to home.

A huge thank you to Shane, Nicole, and the dedicated team at Heartwood Tree Solutions for their tireless effort and dedication to this project. Your hard work has been instrumental in making this a success and providing these fantastic images.

Together, we’re taking practical steps to preserve Australia’s native fauna — one hollow at a time. Stay tuned for more updates on this project as we monitor the hollows use over the coming years!

In natural forests, trees have the advantage of thriving in ecosystems where the environment supports their growth. However, some urban trees face unique challenges that make it difficult for them to fend for themselves.

Factors like:
🔹 Pollution: Airborne pollutants can damage leaves and stunt growth.
🔹 Compacted Soil: Foot and vehicle traffic often compress soil, limiting the tree’s ability for gas exchange and availability of water.
🔹 Restricted Root Space: Urban environments like footpaths, roads, and buildings often limit the natural spread of roots, weakening the tree’s foundation.
🔹 Limited Water Availability: Impermeable surfaces such as concrete or asphalt reduce rain absorption, leaving urban trees water-stressed.
🔹 Pests and Diseases: Urban trees can be more vulnerable to infestations and diseases, particularly when weakened by their environment.

At Arbor Australis, we have a commitment to deliver informed, arboricultural advice to our clients to help them manage their trees or project successfully. Our qualified arborists can assess tree health, identify risks, and recommend targeted treatments like soil aeration, pruning, and pest management.

Client: City Parkland Services (CPS)

Project Duration: 2011 – Current

Arbor Australis Consulting (AAC) has helped to manage the trees at South Bank Parklands since 2001, evolving our approach to meet client needs. Following the 2011 Brisbane floods, we developed a detailed assessment and management plan to address tree health, risk management, and work prioritisation.

Challenges & Solutions -

With high foot traffic and ongoing development, CPS needed a real-time tree data system for compliance, risk management, and maintenance tracking. After reviewing multiple options, Konect software was implemented in 2020.

Results -

✅ Live data access for better decision-making
✅ Strategic work allocation based on risk & budget
✅ Improved cost efficiency by reducing ad-hoc maintenance

The Arboricultural Management Plan now provides a clear, data-driven approach to managing South Bank’s tree assets, ensuring sustainable urban forestry practices.

When planning a development, understanding the impact on existing trees is crucial. Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIAs) help evaluate how a project may affect tree health and structure, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards AS 4970-2025 for tree protection.

🌲What is an Arboricultural Impact Assessment?
Arboricultural Impact Assessments assess proposed projects and their impact on existing trees. Impacts are considered in terms of the trees’ long-term health and structure. Australian Standards AS 4970-2025 “Protection of trees on development sites” is the benchmark used to guide these assessments.

When assessing impacts, consideration needs to be given not only to the finished design but also to how it will be constructed, including the size of the machinery and the space required to achieve the final built form.

🌲 When is an Arboricultural Impact Assessment Required?
AIAs are typically associated with development applications; however, an assessment of impacts is recommended for all sites and levels of construction that have trees present.

Arboricultural Impact Assessment Deliverables – What is required for compliance?

🔹 Existing tree information collected in the tree survey
🔹 Numbering system to allow clear identification of trees
🔹 Review of construction elements that impact existing trees above and below ground
🔹 Identification of trees to be removed and retained
🔹 Protection measures required during construction to isolate trees and mitigate potential damage
🔹 Clearly defined hold points outlining when an Arborist is required during the construction process

Protecting trees during development is about sustainability, safety, and preserving green spaces for the future. If you need an Arboricultural Impact Assessment or have questions about tree protection on your project, reach out to our team. 🌿

🌱Balancing Development & Tree Protection in New Farm Park 🌱

Our team conducted an Arboricultural Impact Assessment for the promenade upgrade, ensuring the park's beautiful trees are protected during development.

The Arboricultural Impact Assessment provided a detailed process, from noon destructive excavation around root systems to implementing Plant Health Care programs.

We worked with the design team at Brisbane City Council to minimise impacts and ensure these trees thrive for years to come. The tree protection strategies included tree protection fencing, compaction mitigation measures and ongoing monitoring of the contractors by the Project Arborist.

By isolating the trees. Mulching the root zones and implementing the Plant Health Care program provided the tree with key elements required for maintaining good health.
The AQF level 5 Project Arborist played a key role in ensuring these elements were implemented and maintained. 🌳
