πͺ° A CLOSER LOOK AT FLY ACTIVITY β WHY THE DETAILS MATTER
While carrying out a routine pest management service for one of Masters Pest Control Sydneyβs major healthcare clients, our technician spotted an interesting fly. What caught his attention was a distinctive red-orange droplet on its abdomen β a small detail that prompted a closer look.
π What is it?
Based on its metallic green-blue sheen, bristly body and wing structure, this fly appears to be a blowfly from the Calliphoridae family. Several species found around Sydney share these characteristics.
π΄ What is the red dot?
One possibility is a droplet of liquid waste being excreted by the fly. Flies process food in liquid form and can rapidly excrete waste, leaving small spots on surfaces where they land.
π₯ Why does this matter in healthcare environments?
Blowflies are commonly associated with decaying organic matter, and they can transfer bacteria from contaminated materials to food preparation areas, canteen surfaces and other frequently used spaces.
In healthcare facilities, maintaining a high standard of hygiene is essential. Even seemingly minor fly activity can be an indication that further investigation may be warranted.
At Masters Pest Control Sydney, we understand the importance of proactive pest management in sensitive environments, including hospitals and healthcare facilities. Identifying pest activity, investigating potential contributing factors and implementing appropriate control measures all play an important role in supporting hygiene standards.
