Our ground engineering crew has recently completed a soil nail and shotcrete retaining wall beneath the Point Cook Road bridge, part of the Victoria's Big Build upgrade for VIDA Roads and head contractor BMD Group.

Working within a tight space beneath the bridge, our low headroom drill rig was ideal for this constrained site and meant works could carry on safely despite the height limitations. The team then carried out mesh fixing and wet mix shotcrete application to build up the wall, adjusting the sequence on site when ground conditions varied from the design - all while keeping one of Melbourne's busiest roads open to traffic.

Impressive work by the Geovert crew who delivered this technical scope safely and to DTPs specification. Thanks to BMD and VIDA Roads for the opportunity to be part of this upgrade.

Our reach across the Pacific continues, with the team recently completing ground improvement works in Suva, Fiji for McConnell Dowell.

Mobilising a full crew, a T156 crawler rig and all required materials from New Zealand in a 20-foot container, the team delivered micropiling, grouting and casing works to a remote and demanding site.

Earlier this year, severe weather caused landslips across the North Island of New Zealand, closing state highways and cutting off communities.

A Sunday call from Stellar Project Management to David Swan, Geovert's New Zealand Operations Manager, requested a team on site the following morning. David briefed team leader Ikanui Enoka, who had a crew on site within five hours, a site inspection completed that evening and work underway by Monday morning. That initial mobilisation was the start of weeks of emergency response across three highways - SH2, SH35 and SH3.

The initial geotechnical risk assessment work carried out was the foundation of every subsequent decision - what to remove, what to leave and in what order - which then determined whether the road reopened or not.

On SH2, the work extended beyond emergency scaling into the design and installation of a drape mesh system with Beca and NZTA, delivered from concept to completion in three weeks.

Stellar's Richard Dodera spoke about Geovert’s response: "Their proactive, collaborative approach and ability to adapt to evolving site conditions contributed to the safe and efficient delivery of stabilisation works and the restoration of these critical transport corridors."

The speed of the response was possible because of the relationships with clients and partners built over 25 years in natural hazard mitigation, combined with the knowledge that Geovert has available the skills and experience needed for this work.

We’ve been back at Kuranda Weir in Far North Queensland for a short return visit, continuing on from our previous work here. The riverbed in this area had become heavily obstructed with rubble and rocks, and reaching the affected sections meant crossing water and navigating unstable ground. That first stage of work cleared the channel and saw water levels drop as flow improved.

The Geovert Spider excavator has been back once more, clearing a further build-up of rocks from the channel to help improve the natural flow. Perfect for this job, the Spider’s articulated leg system is what allows it to operate safely and effectively across rocky and uneven ground.

It’s been a pleasure to continue working alongside CleanCo Queensland on this project.

Post-wildfire debris flow is an unforgiving hazard to work against as the fire removes everything that held the slope together - and when the rain arrives, the material moves quickly and in huge volumes. At Gallinas Canyon in New Mexico, following the largest recorded forest fire in state history, Geovert had 10 days from the initial call to get a 30-strong team mobilised and four Geobrugg debris flow barrier systems in the ground before the rains came.

The installation included a 100-foot span system constructed across a live waterway, with the engineering and construction running concurrently. Lateral anchor systems, custom drilling equipment adapted to the terrain, and debris clearance were all part of the works.

The systems were tested almost immediately as within 30 minutes of the crew leaving site after completing the final barrier, a localised thunderstorm struck and the system captured its first debris flow. Over the following summer, a team returned to the site multiple times to clear and maintain the barriers as successive storms brought further debris down the canyon. These images demonstrate how much material each barrier caught and held - and how effective these systems are.

Geovert has been working on a drilling program at an open cut mine in the Northern Territory, targeting a wall with a history of instability driven by subvertical dipping structures. As a new mining stage exposes more of these structures our team has been onsite installing 10m anchors using the Superboom with the aim of proactively stabilising the wall and preventing further instabilities from occurring in the same location.

While working in the area we are also utilising the Superboom to drill 20m horizontal depressurisation drain holes. Water has been identified as the trigger for previous instability so any work that can be done to reduce the groundwater behind the face will assist the future stability of this wall and managing geotechnical risk as mining continues in this area.

Horizontal drain hole drilling for slope depressurisation is a core part of Geovert’s mining services and runs alongside our tactical and strategic ground support capabilities.

These beautiful views served as the workplace for our US team as they carried out the installation of an avalanche control system for Colorado Department of Transportation at a huge 12,000ft elevation above Highway 550 in Ouray County, Colorado.

Integrating rope access techniques with helicopter operations, the team installed GAZEX™ and O'BELLX™ systems across three slide paths, a project that showed how we manage logistics in challenging alpine terrain.

Using this case study, Geovert collaborated with global leaders in avalanche control technology, MND on an article exploring remote avalanche control systems, from selection and implementation through to emerging industry trends.

The article examines how GAZEX™ and O'BELLX™ systems work and when each is best suited to a site. It also addresses common misconceptions about remote avalanche control and covers design considerations such as modularity, serviceability and installation in extreme alpine conditions.

We draw on Geovert's experience from high-altitude installations like this one to show how manufacturer technology and on-the-ground expertise come together to deliver systems that stay effective and easy to maintain over time.
