If your shower is starting to look like a foot bath, your drain is trying to tell you something.

A slow shower drain is one of those things people put up with for months before doing anything about it. The water pools, you wait for it to clear, and you get used to it. Until you don't.

Most of the time it's a build-up of hair, soap scum, and product residue that's been accumulating just below the drain cover. It's one of the more straightforward blockages to clear when caught early, and one of the more unpleasant ones if left long enough to cause a proper backup.
If yours is draining slowly, it's not going to sort itself out. But it's also probably not the drama it feels like.

A toilet that constantly runs can waste up to 200 litres of water a day. That's not a drip. That's money quietly disappearing every time you walk past the bathroom.

Most running toilets come down to a worn flapper valve or a faulty fill mechanism. The parts are cheap, the fix is quick, but left alone it adds up fast on your water bill.

If your toilet runs between flushes, or you can hear it refilling when no one's used it, it's worth getting looked at. Drop a πŸ’§ in the comments if yours does this. You might be surprised how many people just live with it.

That first dump of winter rain has a way of revealing exactly which drains have been quietly giving up all summer. 🌧️

Stormwater drains are easy to ignore when the sun's out, but leaf litter, dirt, and debris build up slowly over summer, and by the time the rain arrives, the water has nowhere to go.
If you're seeing pooling around your driveway, courtyard, patio, or garden after rain, the drain itself is usually fine. It just needs clearing before things get worse.
Worth sorting now rather than after the next downpour.

Your hot water unit is probably older than you think.

Quick test. Without looking, can you name the make of your hot water unit? Bonus points if you know roughly when it was installed.
Most people can't. The unit lives down the side of the house or in a cupboard, doing its job quietly, until one day it doesn't.

Here's the rough lifespan you're working with. Electric storage units last 8 to 12 years. Gas (storage or instant) gets you 10 to 15. Heat pumps sit in a similar range to gas.

If you bought your place a decade ago and the unit was already there when you moved in, the maths is probably ahead of you.
Drop a comment with how old you think yours is. We're curious. And if the answer makes you uncomfortable, that's also useful information.

Electric, gas, or heat pump. Which one is right for your place?

The three main types of hot water system all do the same job. They heat water and store it (or heat it on demand) for your taps and showers. The difference is in what they cost to run, how quickly they recover, and how much they cost to install.

Electric storage is the most common. Lowest upfront, simple to install, and reliable. The trade-off is higher running costs, particularly on a standard tariff.

Gas (storage or instant) recovers faster, which suits larger households or anyone who has back-to-back showers in the morning. Running costs sit in the middle. Needs a gas connection and proper ventilation.

Heat pump is the most efficient option on the market. It pulls warmth from the surrounding air to heat the water, so running costs are the lowest of the three. Upfront is higher, but the ongoing savings stack up year on year.

The right choice depends on your household size, how you use hot water, where the unit will sit, and what's already connected. There's no universal best answer, which is why we walk through it with you before recommending anything.

Waiting for your hot water unit to fail can cost more than you think.

Most people run their hot water unit until something gives out. A leak, a cold shower, a strange noise that won't go away. Then it becomes an emergency.

The thing about emergencies is they take the cheap options off the table. You're calling around on a Sunday, paying for an urgent callout, accepting whatever unit is on the truck rather than the one that's actually right for your home.
And because most units sit out of sight down the side of the house, the early warning signs go missed. By the time you notice, the gas line, the base, and the surrounding area are often part of the job too.

A planned replacement is a different conversation. You get time to compare electric, gas and heat pump options. You can book it for a quiet weekday and have hot water back by lunchtime.
If your unit is past ten years, or showing its age, planning beats waiting every time.

Hot water can be up to a quarter of your power bill.

That's not a typo. For most Sydney households, 20 to 25 percent of what you pay each quarter is just heating water.
Quick question. When did you last actually look at your hot water unit? Most people couldn't tell you how old theirs is, or what type. Out of sight, out of mind, until the bill arrives or the showers go cold.

An older or inefficient system can quietly cost you hundreds of dollars extra every year compared to a modern one. That gap widens in winter, when the unit is reheating more often to keep up.
A newer system, especially a heat pump, can cut that running cost down significantly.

If your unit is over a decade old, it's worth knowing your options before it makes the decision for you.

Sydney winter is here. Is your hot water system ready?

Mornings are colder, showers are longer, and your hot water unit is doing more work than it has in months.
That's also when most systems give out. Not in summer, when nothing is asking much of them. In the coldest weeks, when a failure is at its most disruptive.

A pre-winter check is one of those quietly smart moves. Cheaper than a midnight callout, less stressful than a cold shower at 6am, and it tends to catch the small issues before they turn into big ones.
If your system is over eight years old, or you've noticed longer reheat times, knocking sounds, or rusty water, it's worth a look now while you've still got the choice.
