I don't know about you, but the cabbage moths are in our North Balgowlah garden in full force. These cute little moths lay their eggs on Brassica plants such as Broccoli, Cabbage, Kale and Cauliflower and when the eggs hatch the caterpillar comes out and munches on the Brassica leaves. So, how to control these very hungry caterpillars? Try leaving egg shells lying around on the ground near the plants? This tricks the moths into thinking that there are already moths there so they move on to avoid competition. If the caterpillars hatch, inspect leaves daily and pick them off before they munch holes away all your hard work. Be sure to check leaf undersides.

Soil Moisture💧🌧🌦🌻🌱

The lovely rain and warm weather is making for abundant growth in our garden. Now is a strategic time to add thick layers of mulch to help retain the moisture in your soil. I prefer lucerne or pea straw mulch. Always soak your mulch in a bucket and apply wet.

Seed collecting is easy and fun. My winter garden is going to flower. I am letting this happen so that we can collect seeds that will come after flowering finishes. Save seeds of your favourite plants and share them with others. Seeds are precious.

With autumn comes the warm golden marigold flower. The Tagetes lemmonii also called mountain marigold, Mexican bush marigold and tangarine marigold makes a lovely addition to the garden. It has a lovely scent when brushed and flushes with flower twice a year. It grows easily in a sunny position with very little water and in most soils. This plant’s roots help to repel soil nematodes. Chop and drop this plant when pruning as the leaves are also beneficial to the soil.
