Townsville Public Health Unit has confirmed a locally acquired case of Murray Valley encephalitis, with a patient from the Hinchinbrook region in Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition.
The virus spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito and not from person to person.
Townsville Public Health Unit acting director Dr Kate Murton says there's not cause for concern in the community.
However, she says it's a good reminder to avoid mosquito bites.
