Pulled a system off a Karalee roof on Monday.

Installing solar is straightforward when you’ve done it enough. You control the variables — layout, cable runs, mount placement. You build it right from the start.

Removal is a different job. By the time a system comes down, it’s been through 10 to 15 summers. Mounting brackets corrode into the frame. Cables harden and go brittle. You’re working around a roof that’s been aging underneath it the whole time.

Solar in Australia has never been more regulated — and that's a good thing for homeowners.

Over the last few years, the standards governing how solar systems are installed have been significantly strengthened. Here's what that actually means for anyone with panels on their roof:

✅ Stricter cable management rules — installers are now required to use proper cable clips and supports. Cables must be correctly secured and protected, reducing wear and the risk of electrical faults over time.

✅ Mandatory conduit labelling — all solar conduit must now be clearly labelled. This means electricians and emergency services can immediately identify solar wiring in your home, making future work and emergencies safer.

✅ Tighter DC cable routing rules — DC cables inside roof cavities now have to meet specific clearance requirements, reducing heat buildup and fire risk.

✅ Better documentation for homeowners — installers are now required to provide a system manual showing exactly where your disconnection points and cable routes are. You should know what's on your roof.

✅ Higher safety thresholds across the board — the 2021 update to AS/NZS 5033 (the national solar installation standard) raised the bar on everything from earthing to connector quality.

Every now and then something comes along that's bigger than a solar system.

Two 18yr old blokes, Kye and Joe, from Palm Beach and Burleigh in the GC are running 105 kilometres through Mount Coot-tha on July 18th to raise money for Beyond Blue.

No training background. No obvious reason to sign up for one of Australia's toughest ultra marathons. Just two mates who looked at what's happening to people their age and decided to do something about it.
