Highly recommend using licenced operators and have contracts in place with their contact details. Good operator got nothing to hide.

Brisbane resident Paul Coplick is facing potential imprisonment under a new system of escalating penalties following his third conviction for carrying out unlawful building work.

The Brisbane contractor was disqualified from holding a QBCC licence from 2018 to 2021. In September of 2020, Mr Coplick provided a quote to a homeowner for concreting work to the amount of $8,350, with $3,350 to be paid as a deposit. This amount was paid the same day by the homeowner.

The contractor did not conduct any work and did not return the deposit.

24 January saw Mr Coplick convicted of carrying out building work and was fined $15,000 and ordered to repay the homeowner $3,350, and could face potential imprisonment time.

We have included the link below to conduct a free licensing search. It is really quick and can save you time in the long run. ⬇️

Be wary of contractors charging high deposits, we seen a few charging 50% deposits and then not show up- we only ask for the initial deposit of 10% and the progress payments once sections have done or completed. It is only fair.

A written agreement between you and your contractor is vital for a successful build. However, understanding what is required of you regarding payment can be difficult.

To help, we've outlined the laws around how much you should pay for a deposit.

For progress payments, when the contract is valued at more than $3,300, the number and timing of progress payments should be negotiated between you and your contractor.

However, all progress payments must reflect the amount of work performed on-site. For example, the contractor can't claim more than 50% of the contract price, including the deposit, until at least 50% of the work has been completed on-site.
