It was an honour several years ago to represent the Institute of Architects NSW in a review of the Sydney Modern Project ( as it was then called ) with the team from Architectus MCGREGOR COXALL and SANAA
An exciting scheme, completely changed from the original competition winning scheme , in form and circulation.
The pre DA drawings we reviewed were incredibly minimal and many more consultants were bought on to resolve the complex design, including Arup engineers.
The build, by Richard Crookes Constructions is nothing short of remarkable, especially given the constraints of language, complexity and site ( building on a land bridge )
The original Art Gallery of NSW Members has always been a source of inspiration for as long as I can remember.
The original Art Gallery, built between 1896 and 1909, another Federation Project designed by the Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon, with major extensions designed by the Government Architect Andrew Anderson in 1972 and 1988 and Richard Johnson of JPW in 2003.
