End of season reset 🌱

This lawn was healthy and growing well all season… but with good growth comes something people forget about, thatch.

Thatch is just a build-up of old runners, stems and organic matter sitting between the grass and the soil. A little is normal. Too much and it starts to:
• Block water from reaching the roots
• Hold excess moisture
• Make the lawn spongy
• Dull the colour

So we gave it a proper end-of-season scalp and dethatch.

📸 Day 1 – looks brutal
📸 Day 7 – starting to wake up
📸 Day 14 – filling back in
📸 Day 21 – green, tight and healthy

This time of year is ideal. We’ve still got warm days and decent rain around, which means the lawn can recover properly before winter slows everything down.

If your buffalo or kikuyu has had a strong growing season, a reset like this can completely change how it performs next year.

Not always about throwing more fertiliser at it, sometimes it just needs to breathe again.

Here’s a renovation I completed on the 1st of December for a local client, and the transformation 13–14 weeks later speaks for itself.

This buffalo lawn had close to 6 years of thatch buildup. It was thick, spongy underfoot, difficult to mow, and no matter how much it was watered, very little was actually reaching the soil. The lawn was slowly declining.

We knew going in that early summer renovations can be risky with the heat, but the client was committed to a proper watering schedule, which is critical for success.

The process involved a full scarification, removing roughly half a tonne of thatch from just 70m². Once that barrier was gone, water and nutrients could finally pe*****te the soil and the lawn had room to recover.

Fast forward to now…

The lawn has made an excellent recovery, is holding strong colour, and is being maintained at a healthy mowing height. Water usage has reduced significantly because it’s now reaching the root zone where it should.

It hasn’t even had its next fertiliser application yet, so there’s still plenty more upside to come.

Sometimes a lawn doesn’t need replacing, it just needs the opportunity to breathe again.

If your lawn feels spongy, looks tired, or isn’t responding to watering or fertiliser, a renovation may be exactly what it needs.

This is what long-term lawn care looks like 👌

Not just a quick mow and out the gate, this lawn is on a year-round care plan. Fortnightly mowing, w**d control, pre-emergent treatments, spot spraying when needed, plus pressure washing to keep everything looking fresh.

Because when a lawn is looked after properly, it stays thick, healthy and damage-free all year round 🌱

Big thanks to this long-time client for trusting me with her place.

The Difference a Bit of Care Makes! 🌱

Take a look at these two lawns 👇

The first is a healthy, thriving buffalo lawn, regularly watered, fed the right fertilizers, and full of life.

The second is what happens when lawns become moisture stressed, dry, patchy, and struggling to bounce back.

With the warm weather and dry conditions lately, it’s more important than ever to keep up regular watering.

Those quick, heavy downpours we’ve been getting don’t soak in deep enough, the water just runs off instead of feeding the roots.

Consistent watering, just 2 to 3 times per week, and a bit of care = a lush, green lawn all season long! 💧🌿
