Diary of a Brussels Kitchen Garden

Diary of a Brussels Kitchen Garden Website about growing vegetables in a small urban garden in a large modern city.

This diary is about the small kitchen garden behind our house on the south side of the city of Brussels. The garden measuring 12 metres by 5 metres sits on an axis of north-west to south-east and has limited southern exposure. Three sides of the garden enjoy a progression of morning and afternoon sunshine while the fourth is in permanent shade. The garden serves multiple functions for the househol

d and family and has only a small area devoted to vegetable growing. It is surrounded by tall buildings and over-hanging trees and walled on three sides. With only limited space available for growing the aim in this garden is to use elevation for vegetable production.

Garden design idea 💡

When planning a garden for the year it is important not to be set in your ways and just keep repeating the same exercise from previous years.

When planning a garden for the year it is important not to be set in your ways and just keep repeating the same exercise. It's worth changing things around

Early beans: Starting broad beans 🫘

These fast growing beans can be planted in the autumn to over-winter or in early spring (February/March) for a summer crop. They grow well in soil or in containers.

https://kitchen-garden.be/diary/early-beans-starting-broad-beans

Considered winter beans because they grow best in cool weather & dislike heat. Can be planted in the autumn to over-winter for an early summer harvest.

Vertical Gardening 🏡

In the urban city garden there is often no option but to use vertical space. Ground conditions in a city space often mean dampness and an increase in slugs and snails at ground level.

https://kitchen-garden.be/gardening-why-garden/vertical-gardening

Vertical gardening is for gardeners who do not have a lot of horizontal space. It has become a niche science with many elaborate and quite amazing systems.

Early tomatoes 🍅

While it is still still too early to start summer tomatoes from seed indoors (end of February), it is well worth starting some Russian and Eastern European tomato seeds.

While it is still still too early to start summer tomatoes from seed indoors (end of February), it is well worth starting some Russian and Eastern European tomato seeds. These are early tomatoes that need 8 weeks indoors before slowly moving outside. As their names (eg Sub-Arctic Plenty) these are m...

February winter weather 🥶

A lot of gardeners hold that a wintery February month is a good sign for a later spring, as though getting the heavy winter weather out the way in February bodes well for March and April.

Heirloom Seeds 🌱

It is generally accepted that an heirloom vegetable is an old cultivar that is “still maintained by gardeners and farmers particularly in isolated or ethnic communities.”

https://kitchen-garden.be/gardening-why-garden/heirloom-seeds

Get in trouble with the law? If certain agribusiness interests get their way it will no longer be legal to save seeds and share them with other people.

Summer may be some way off but it does no harm to start thinking about just what you want to achieve in the garden (or on the balcony) this year. This all starts by ordering the seeds in the next week or two and being ready to start them indoors. Seeds are easily delivered through the post.

Compost: Growing Soil 🪱

Creating a good “living soil” is best achieved with the regular addition of composted organic material to the soil. Making your own compost therefore becomes an essential part of good gardening practice…

https://kitchen-garden.be/gardening-why-garden/compost-growing-soil

Compost, growing living soil. The foundation of any garden is soil. It consists of a mixture of minerals, organic matter, gases, liquids, and the countless organisms that together support plant growth. Soil should be considered a living medium in the garden, full of life and integrated with the surr...

Starting chilli peppers 🌶️

Mid February to mid March is the time to get started with these slow growing plants so when the summer comes the plants are ready to sit outdoors.

https://kitchen-garden.be/diary/starting-chilli-peppers

Chilli peppers are fun to grow. Better suited to pots than soil (damp & cold). Starting indoors now they should be ready to move outdoors in May or June.

February: Strange gardening weather 🌦️

February and March are not really good gardening months. In the old days there would be a slow transition from proper winter weather (snow) into cold dry days before spring.

https://kitchen-garden.be/diary/february-strange-gardening-weather

February & March aren't good gardening months. In the old days there would be a slow transition from proper winter weather into cold dry days before spring.
