BC architects & studies & materials

BC architects & studies & materials BC is a hybrid practice designing and undertaking acts of building for systemic change in construction. Standardized circular materials Léém by BC materials.

BC is BC architects & studies & materials. BC stands for Brussels Cooperation and points to how BC grew - embedded within place and people. We operate through 3 legal entities registered in Belgium: BC architects bvba (architecture company), BC studies vzw (non-profit), BC materials cv (material production cooperative). BC is a hybrid practice, designing and undertaking "acts of building" towards

systemic change in the construction sector. We strive for bioregional, low-tech, circular, beautiful and inclusive design. We work with our minds and our hands, undertaking activities such as community organisation, material production, contracting, teaching, prototyping. We aim to impact positively on people's ideas and planet. We act on behalf of the generations after us. Started in between 2009 and 2012, our team currently consists of 4 co-founders and around 20 collaborators, working from Brussels on projects on the European and African continent. On July 9th, we are presenting the findings of Grounded Futures, a research project and 1:1 prototype exploring a new material culture for Barcelona.
Modern urbanization has fundamentally altered the Earth's surface. To adapt, we must rethink how we build. By combining Mediterranean algae with calcium-rich construction waste, we have developed three new biomineralized building materials.
Join us to discover how using these "soft" materials in the right places helps us work with nature to build healthier spaces.

Prototyping has always been a core part of our practice. When working with reused construction elements, we must thoroughly understand their properties to get the very best out of them. As part of the GREENBIZZ II project, we are currently conducting material tests on reused granite facade panels originally from La Défense, Paris, provided by our project partner, .construction . By treating these stones with a mix of linseed oil and turpentine, we are closely evaluating their water absorption and long-term viability.

As part of the BC Summer School, we are excited to host a public lecture by .architecture to explore a crucial question: How do we rethink architecture in a world of finite resources?
Bento is an architecture, design, scenography, and research practice focused on natural and living materials. Their work is dedicated to decarbonizing the construction sector, advocating for an architecture that highlights craftsmanship, experimentation, and the living environment.

Before we head over to the lecture, everyone is warmly invited to gather for a drink at Brasserie de la Senne!

For the TEGELTJES project, we created a series of triangular tables for the entry hall at the in Leuven. The final pieces highlight how simple earth-building techniques can produce useful, durable furniture for public spaces.

The project started with an open call, inviting a wide variety of people to get together and try out building with earth on a small but practical scale. By using partly prefabricated table plates and prepared resources, everyone was able to experiment freely with their own earth mixtures.

We kept the design simple so that the group could work directly with the material and learn about its texture and strength by doing. This approach shows how natural materials can be used for modern needs while keeping the process open to everyone.

For our upcoming BC afterwork, we are pleased to welcome Sarah El Yousefy and Nina Ouchinsky of CRU. They will present the work of their Brussels-based design studio and their methodology for shaping bespoke pieces using raw earth, h**p, and natural finishes. This session offers an inside look at the everyday practicalities of material-driven design.
