BC architects & studies & materials

BC architects & studies & materials BC is a hybrid practice designing and undertaking acts of building for systemic change in construction. Standardized circular materials Léém by BC materials.

BC is BC architects & studies & materials. BC stands for Brussels Cooperation and points to how BC grew - embedded within place and people. We operate through 3 legal entities registered in Belgium: BC architects bvba (architecture company), BC studies vzw (non-profit), BC materials cv (material production cooperative). BC is a hybrid practice, designing and undertaking "acts of building" towards

systemic change in the construction sector. We strive for bioregional, low-tech, circular, beautiful and inclusive design. We work with our minds and our hands, undertaking activities such as community organisation, material production, contracting, teaching, prototyping. We aim to impact positively on people's ideas and planet. We act on behalf of the generations after us. Started in between 2009 and 2012, our team currently consists of 4 co-founders and around 20 collaborators, working from Brussels on projects on the European and African continent. Transforming our building culture requires working directly with materials in real contexts. At TU Wien, students recently designed and constructed three full-scale spatial interventions: a kitchen, a work-meet area, and a read-rest zone.

Far beyond temporary learning exercises, these are high-quality, fully functional structures. They were constructed using rammed earth with a terrazzo finish. This careful treatment transforms the raw earth into a refined, durable surface that is entirely practical for daily use.

The project explores how material intelligence can serve as a climatic agent. By relying on the natural properties of earth-based materials rather than standard mechanical systems, these solid interventions actively shape the comfort, perception, and atmosphere of the spaces they occupy.

Join us to our upcoming Afterwork event on September 3rd, where we are hosting OUEST Architecture.

Based in Brussels, their practice focuses on transforming existing structures through clear, measured interventions. They approach the built environment with a strong sensitivity to context and the ongoing life of a space.
Join us on September 03rd at 18:30 for their presentation, followed by a drink and conversation.

Taking material research from an academic setting into everyday construction practice requires trust. We build that trust through physical testing.

For the Ringpark project, we are evaluating how rammed earth responds to heavy rain. Rather than relying purely on theory, we simulate the weather. By spraying water onto different samples and measuring exactly what washes off, we get a clear picture of the material’s durability.

It is a straightforward method to understand material behaviour. This kind of hands-on testing is how we bridge the gap between lab research and the physical realities of the building site.
