See those two trees? Still green. And everything else ? well....
Without shade, a lawn in July doesn't stand a chance. A tree changes the whole microclimate around it — and that's before we even talk about how it looks.

A vista needs a frame. Usually it's a hedge, an arch, an avenue of trees. Here it's a Henry Moore bronze.
Through the hole: a long view, trees on both sides, the Temperate House in the distance. The eye goes straight there. Doesn't wander, doesn't stop. Just travels.
Moore didn't design this view. But he knew exactly what his sculpture would do to it.

Vista. The word sounds grand but the idea is simple — frame a view, give the eye a direction, let the garden pull you through itself.
The Henry Moore exhibition at Kew does this beautifully. Thirty bronzes placed across 320 acres. You're never just looking at a sculpture. You're always also looking at what's behind it, beside it, beyond it.
"Monumental Nature".

Shape contrast is underrated.
Kniphofia, helenium, bergenia — all in the same warm orange-green range. But one goes up, one spreads out, one sits low and broad. You get movement, structure and ground cover without a single colour clash.
I love this. A garden doesn't have to shout.
What do you think — more colour, or more shape?

30,000 plants. In one border.

Okay, not all of them at the same time — but anyways. A botanical garden is of course a place to get new insights and discover new plant combinations. Made to impress and educate. But this is not a copy-paste for your private garden, unless you have the same number of gardeners on duty. )

Totally unexpected stop on the way to somewhere else.
Grosvenor Square in Mayfair — one of London's largest private garden squares. The London plane trees here are enormous and very old. You walk in off a busy street and suddenly it's quiet and green and the light is completely different.
As a garden designer I find these old city squares fascinating. Someone planted those trees a hundred years ago knowing they'd eventually do exactly this. Close out the city. Make the air feel different. Give people a reason to slow down.
It still works.
