For this mudroom, the layout focused on making everyday life a little easier. We positioned it directly across from the large walk-in pantry, so when you come home with your hands full of groceries or a Costco haul, you have a straight shot to tuck everything away.

We added a long built-in bench with drawer storage, plenty of hooks, and a faux brick herringbone floor that can handle real life. The large window brings in so much natural light and keeps what could have been a purely functional space feeling bright and welcoming.

These small decisions in the floor plan can make a big difference in how a home actually functions for the family living in it.

A mudroom has to work hard, especially through a Calgary winter, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look good doing it.

For this one, we included a large walk-in closet, a built-in bench with hooks above, and plenty of storage for all the toques, gloves, and everything else that seems to collect at the back door. We added wainscoting because it gives us a much more durable wall surface for shoes being kicked off and everyday life, then had some fun with wallpaper above it.

And of course, a full-length mirror. Perfect for one last look before heading out the door.

When we’re designing a mudroom, we spend a lot of time discussing what type of storage will work best for the family living in the home.

Do they want everything tucked behind closed doors? Individual lockers for everyone? A long seating bench with hooks above? Open shoe storage? Or, when space allows, a combination of all of it.

There is no copy-and-paste mudroom design in our homes. We look at how each family comes and goes, what they need to store and how they actually live. It’s one of the hardest-working rooms in the house, so it needs to be designed specifically for the people who use it every day.

This week, we’re walking you through a few different mudrooms, one of the hardest-working spaces in the homes we build, especially with Calgary’s unpredictable weather.

Not every mudroom needs to be sprawling. We had just over 50 square feet to work with, so we made sure we didn't miss a single inch. Full-height cabinetry keeps everyday mess behind closed doors, drawers below the bench add even more storage, a key drop right at the door gives everything a landing spot, and a dedicated closet holds all those winter coats we’ll need before we know it.

Because this mudroom has direct access to the kitchen, it also needed to feel like an extension of the home. The marble checkerboard floor, warm wood bench, and brass hardware gave us all the function we needed without sacrificing its beauty.

Laundry rooms are one of those spaces where function really does come first, but there is definitely more than one way to get it right.

A large central island with room to fold and sort, a long organized layout with pull-out drying racks tucked away when they are not needed, or a U-shaped room with tons of storage and counter space.

Three completely different layouts designed for three different homes. Which one are you choosing, 1, 2 or 3?

THINGS WE THINK ARE WORTH IT

CUSTOM MILLWORK. EVERY TIME.

It adds character and architecture to spaces that could otherwise be forgotten.

NATURAL STONE. ALWAYS WORTH IT.

The movement, variation and imperfections are exactly what make it beautiful.

LIGHTING SHOULD MAKE A STATEMENT.

The right fixture can completely change a room and should feel just as considered as every other finish.

DON’T FORGET THE CEILING.

Ceiling details add architecture, warmth and another layer of character to a room.

HARDWARE IS THE JEWELRY.

And yes, you can mix metals. In fact, we think you should. The key is making it feel intentional.

This home was designed for a large family, ensuring everyone had a place to gather without ever feeling disconnected.

The first island, closest to the cooktop, focuses on prep and storage. The second is where everyone can pull up a chair, with seating on both sides. Just beyond is the informal dining nook, surrounded by windows, giving them another place to gather while staying fully connected to the kitchen.

When we design a floor plan, we think about how our clients will actually live in it. In this home, that meant creating one large, open space with room for one more.

Every family lives differently, and their home should reflect that.

When we design a custom home, we spend a lot of time fine-tuning the layout, interior selections, and every detail in between to suit the family we are designing and building it for. How they cook, how they entertain, how many people gather around the island and simply how they want their home to feel.

These kitchens may all be ours, but they were never designed to look the same. They were designed to feel right for the people who call them home. Which one feels most like you?

It is always in the details.

The profile of a marble edge, a custom metal railing, the shape of a stone backsplash, the texture of a fireplace surround, or the way a stair curves into the floor below. Individually, these are small moments, but together they give a home its character.

We spend a ridiculous amount of time working through details like these, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Custom should feel custom, right down to the smallest detail.
