Installed prefab knockdown shelving/storage system, with space for drill press. Added custom built maple work surface, with solid maple edges, and custom made, recessed, mitre saw support so that the table of the mitre saw is flush with the work surface, to aid in the ease of cutting longer stock.

This video shows moisture damage to a house caused by defective windows. These same conditions can be caused by improperly installed flashings, missing caulking, improperly installed windows, etc. This is what can happen when moisture is allowed to get behind the siding of a house.

Ice damming is a big problem this winter due to the large amounts of snow combined with warm and cold temperatures.
Homeowners concerned about ice damming, should avoid hiring people/firms who use shovels (especially with metal edges), and hatchets to remove the ice dam (as seen in this video). These tools, and these people, can actually shorten the life expectancy of the roofing materials by chipping and loosening shingles, and by scraping off the granular material on the shingles. Damage can also be done to roofing materials and eavethroughs by repeated and misplaced blows from hatchets. Most homeowners will not know that their roofing materials have been damaged after hiring these types of people/firms.
So what should people do if ice damming is a concern? Simply get a “snow rake” and gently remove the snow which is insulating/covering the ice, and let the sun melt away the ice naturally. This also eliminates the dangers of mounting a steep, slippery roof. See the following video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHykvbsKB5Y&sns=em
Always follow the manufacturers assembly, operation, and safety instructions. Or, only hire people/firms that use techniques such as this to remove the snow from the eaves/edges of your roof; not damage your roof.

This is another example of improperly installed exterior siding; particularly the flashings. Flashings are required to be installed at every horizontal junction between cladding elements, every horizontal offset in the cladding, and every horizontal line where substrates change, except where the upper finish overlaps the lower finish by not less than 1 inch (25mm). This is to help prevent moisture intrusion in to your building. Furthermore, this condition, or similar conditions exists on nearly every house I inspect with different degrees of severity.
As you can see by this picture, the installer knows a flashing is required, but could not be bothered to do the job correctly/completely. This is in part because, he/she knows that this workmanship will never be inspected by a Civic or Provincial Authority.
It is obvious by the 2nd picture, that moisture in the form of run-off or driven weather, can easily get behind this siding and will will eventually make its way in to the framing, insulation, interior walls and flooring which will lead to moisture damage and possible mould growth.
Sadly, I do not know of any jurisdiction where an exterior siding inspection or roofing inspection is required, for new construction, or renovations. In my opinion, these types of inspections should be mandatory. If these areas were required to be inspected, this would help all of us protect ourselves from this kind of construction shortcutting. Eventually, the consumer/homeowner will have to pay for expensive/extensive repairs caused by moisture pe*******on, which will present themselves after any warranty period had ended. Moisture pe*******on is avoidable if the the building envelope and exterior siding are installed to the minimum requirements as set out by the Government of Alberta, and by the manufactures of exterior siding products.
I encourage everyone to write a letter to their MLA and City Councillor to demand that Roofing and Siding Inspections become a requirement in the building and renovation process, and should be overseen by the appropriate Provincial and/or Municipal Authority.
As consumers/homeowners, we are not asking for anything extra here, just that the installations be done correctly, to the minimum standards; thats all; thats what we are paying for. Is this too much to expect? I think not.

Framing, sheathing and siding materials should never be installed in contact with grade. Section 9.27.2.4 of the Alberta Building Code states that: A clearance of not less than 200mm shall be provided between finished ground and cladding...
So in this photo example, the stucco, tar paper, and framing/sheathing are installed at grade. You can see that after several years of exposure to the elements, and chronic wicking of moisture, the stucco shows signs of staining and deterioration. Upon removal of the deteriorated stucco, it is obvious that the tar paper, wire mesh has also deteriorated, and moisture is starting to affect the wood framing/sheathing behind it. Most garages are built as "slab on grade" and suffer this condition. Many houses are improperly landscaped or have walkways/patios pour over top of siding materials which also creates this condition. This is yet another reason to call for civic/municipal exterior inspections for new construction and renovations, as builders and siding contractors don't care, as they know they will never have their work "inspected" for compliance, or care if the the work they did performs properly. Many just want to cash their cheques.

I know that I am the only Inspector up on a wet, slippery roof today. Good thing to, as this is the only way to find the missing shingles up on this roof; other Inspection Firms Do Not get on roofs.

This is what can happen to a house when the required flashings are not installed. With continued moisture pe*******on at joints between dis-simmilar siding/trim materials, deterioration of the tar paper or house wrap will occur, leading to moisture pe*******on into the building as well as deterioration/rot to the sheathing and framing. In this particular instance, this condition was caught before significant damage could occur.
Nearly every house I inspect is missing flashings at many locations. It still amazes me that in this day and age, there is still no civic/municipal Inspection required for the exterior of a house when it is built by any jurisdiction that I am aware of.

Its always been a fact: Natural Gas Dryers are better than Electric Dryers.
These fun little signs used to be found in basements of newly constructed homes in the 60's-70's. How many of you can remember seeing one of these?
