They say "use the right tool for the job," but sometimes the right tool is just whatever has four wheels and an empty trunk. 😂 When the whole fleet is out making yards beautiful and you need to do a quick plant run, you have to deploy the most elite, heavy-duty, tactical utility vehicle available: the daily commuter. Don’t let her fool you, she’s got the payload of at least two wheelbarrows!

Most yards hit a lull in August, but it doesn’t have to be that way! 🛑

These late-summer showstoppers are absolute non-negotiables in our landscape designs. They bring a massive hit of color right when everything else is starting to look a little tired, and the best part? These hardy champions will keep showing off well into the fall. 🍂✨

Here is the exact lineup of heavy hitters currently stealing the show:

The Giants: Hollyhocks & Delphiniums bring that crucial, towering height to the back of the garden beds.

The Firecrackers: Black-Eyed Susans, Helenium, and Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) are the ultimate drought-tolerant powerhouses that laugh at the late-summer heat.

The Showstoppers: Annabelle and Panicle Hydrangeas offer massive blooms that look incredible now, and just as good when they dry out in autumn.

The Pollinator Pub: Globe Thistle provides funky, architectural purple spheres, while English Lavender and Garden Phlox bring incredible fragrance. (Honorable mention to Salvia/Sage—it didn't make the video, but it’s an absolute staple in our designs that the bees lose their minds over!) 🐝

The Classics: Because a late-summer yard just isn't complete without the enduring pop of Roses. 🌹

Planning a landscape that blooms continuously from spring to fall is the ultimate garden flex.

Say goodbye to the mud! 🚫 We just wrapped up Phase 3 at this property, upgrading an old mulch bed into a sleek paver strip. It connects perfectly to the patio we built for them a few years back, creating the perfect, clean spot for seasonal storage. Bring on Phase 4 next spring!

Spoiler alert: It never calms down.

Is it too late to plant? 🤔

It’s August, and one of the most common questions we get at Garden Gnomes YYC is whether the planting window has closed for the year.

Because of the massive "spring rush," it’s easy to think that May and June are the only times to get new trees, shrubs, and perennials in the ground. While spring is great for giving plants a full season to settle in, late summer and fall are actually a landscaper's secret weapon. 🤫

Here is why planting right now (and all the way until the ground freezes) is incredibly effective:

🍂 The Energy Shift: As we head into fall, plants naturally stop trying to grow new leaves and flowers. Instead, they push all their energy downward into their roots. This is exactly what we want for new additions to your yard!

🌡️ The Perfect Combo: The air is getting cooler (which means less stress and water loss for the plant), but the soil is still nice and warm from the summer—the perfect recipe for explosive root development.

💤 The Dormancy Advantage: You can plant all the way into early winter! When a plant goes dormant, it experiences almost zero transplant shock. Once the snow melts next spring, your new plants will wake up already established in the ground and ready to push their energy into new shoots instead of recovering.

Bottom line: As long as your shovel can still break the ground, it's not too late.

Laid this outdoor carpet down just in time to let this week’s rain do the rest of the work. 🌧️

Our client inherited this lumpy overgrown yard when they moved in last year. We cleared out the mess and laid down the essentials: a fresh lawn from Manderley Turf Products Inc. and a natural tree privacy screen. A perfect clean slate to build on over the years.

Sometimes, starting simple is the best way to plan for the future.
