Carrots and beets can stay in the ground until it snows, if you want. But, sometimes you're just ready to put your garden to bed. It's the perfect, beautiful week to finish up in the garden. The only thing left to keep growing is the Brussels sprouts.

Carrots (including the purple Vampire carrots) are being stored through the winter in a tub of slightly moist (using a spray bottle) play sand in my cold basement room. If you're using this method, don't wash them, just brush the dirt off. They can also be stored in the fridge if you have the space.

Carrot tops went into the freezer to add to homemade stock. They can also be used for pesto, sauces, soups, etc.

The teeny tiny beets were pickled in the fridge and the larger beets will be cooked for dinner, yum! Beet tops were chopped and put in the freezer to stir-fry and add to recipes.

The radicchio is a cold hardy vegetable so it's frost tolerant. Such a beautiful colour!

You can usually use the whole vegetable. You took the time to nurture them all summer, use every bit of them that you can.

Canning food is straightforward but needs to be done correctly. Follow the recipe to make sure the acidity or the sugar content is high enough to preserve the food. And when you process your jars in a hot water bath, make sure you adjust the time for your altitude.

I love green tomato chow chow! It uses up my abundance of green tomatoes at the end of the year, and it's delicious! This year I had some beautiful Indigo Rose tomatoes that added a nice red colour to my green tomato chow chow.

Growing food to enjoy year round.

Harvested the last of the celery, potatoes, Bull's Blood beets, and a teeny tiny cabbage. Only carrots, beets, and Brussels sprouts left to be harvested next week.

Celery will be washed and put in the freezer.

Potatoes will be eaten this week. The scabs are cosmetic and a sign that I need to plant my potatoes in a different spot next year.

The Bull's Blood beets didn't produce significant beets but have beautiful leaves that will be chopped up and frozen.

And the baby cabbage? I'll probably enjoy it raw and think about how great it is to grow my own food.

Veggies still have time to grow this season but sometimes you just want to harvest.

My kitchen smells amazing! Freshly harvested herbs, onions, tomatoes, peppers, the last few beans, and a mound of potatoes. Only 2 tomatillos though. The squirrels had a Mexican fiesta party one night and took all but 2.

Cold tolerant veggies are still good to stay out and grow for another few weeks - Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, etc. And root vegetables (carrots, beets, parsnips) LOVE cold weather, it makes them sweeter.

Processing your garden vegetables and fruits is a great way to enjoy them through the winter. Canning and drying preserves them for years and freezing preserves them through the winter. Some can even be stored in a cool room as is.

An easy way to process and abundance of apples is with a food mill. No need to core or peel the apples. Cut them into quarters, boil them with a small amount of water (to soften them) and some lemon juice (to maintain the colour and help with preservation), and run them through the food mill. The mill will push the apple pulp through while separating out the stems, seeds, and skins. Then freeze it or process it in a hot water bath or pressure canner.

Swiss chard, kale, beet greens, etc. can be chopped up, put into a bag or container, and frozen.

Herbs can be frozen as is or chopped up and frozen in ice cube trays in water, butter, or oil.

Beans, carrots, and cucumbers can be pickled as refrigerator pickles (shelf life of 1-3 months) or process in a hot water bath or pressure canner (shelf life of 12-18 months).

Potatoes, onions, and garlic can be stored in a cool room.

There are so many ways for your garden to provide food throughout the year.

My garden oasis is now certified as a wildlife-friendly habitat. I encourage others to do the same. Sitting in my garden watching the different bees, birds, and yes, even the vegetable-eating bunnies, is a joy.

To certify you need at least 3 food sources, a water source, 3 areas to shelter, 2 green gardening practices, sustainable practices, and practice earth-friendly gardening (no chemical pesticides). Certify through the Canadian Wildlife Federation and make your garden an oasis for all sorts of critters, bugs, and birds.

It's September, and time to start thinking about your 2027 garden!

Existing Gardens: Take photos and note what went well and what didn't, what you liked and what frustrated you. Start your 2027 garden plan now and incorporate the changes - if you wait until 2027, you may not remember.

New Gardens or Expansions: If you're building new beds or garden areas, start planning them now. You may be able to build them this fall and be ready to plant in the spring. If you're booking a company to build them for you, now is the time to reserve your spot before they're all booked up - they're already booking for 2027, and everyone wants their garden built first.

Try New Plants:
- Different tomatoes, like the Indigo Rose, so beautiful.
- Tomatillos are easy to grow and are so interesting with their papery exterior.
- Herbs like French tarragon (perennial), marjoram, stevia (a tiny piece packs a sugary punch), or chervil (annuals). Chervil tastes like licorice and loves part shade. Pineapple sage actually smells like pineapple.
- Radicchio varieties add nice colour with either red or red veined leaves.
- Plant flowers in your vegetable garden. Nasturtiums, marigolds, calendula, and zinnias are great pest deterrent plants and add beautiful colour to the garden.

Canning season is here!! Made a batch of pickles this morning.

My favorite is canning peaches or pears with just water and lemon juice. Eating them in the middle of winter brings me back to summer days.

I use the tried and true recipes from and . Easy to follow instructions and safe for storage.

A simple and amazing way to preserve your summer harvest to enjoy all winter.

Cabbage and Brussel sprouts love cooler weather and may be just starting to form. Ever wonder what they look like as babies?

Also threw in cauliflower and broccoli, since they are a family.
