The grid doesn't build itself.

Today, on National Lineworker Appreciation Day, we're recognizing the powerline technicians who keep Ontario powered, working at height, in every season, through every challenge, with safety leading every job.

Before electricity reaches our homes, businesses, and communities, it passes through their hands.

To every member of our crews: thank you.
Your skill, commitment, and professionalism keep the lights on and our communities connected.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we at Cormorant are honoured to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, contributions, and achievements of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples across Turtle Island. We acknowledge the importance of learning from Indigenous knowledge, values, and deep respect for the land.

We are grateful for the continued opportunity to work in the traditional territories of Indigenous people across Canada. Indigenous Community Engagement and Participation help inform our work and strengthen our ability to create meaningful and lasting impacts in the communities we serve. The leadership, local knowledge, and collaborative potential of Indigenous communities help to shape our path forward as a company.

Today, we also recognize that there is still important work to be done to ensure Indigenous voices are heard, respected, and included. At Cormorant, we remain committed to advancing Reconciliation and Nation Building through listening, learning, meaningful action, and moving together forward in partnership

After 35+ years of leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to keeping our teams safe, we are proud to celebrate the retirement of our Director of Health & Safety, Doug Matthew.

From job sites to boardrooms, Doug’s impact has been felt across every project, every crew, and every individual who stepped onto a site safer because of his guidance. His knowledge, mentorship, and steady leadership helped shape the culture we are proud of today.

Doug’s commitment to safety was never just part of the job; it was the standard he set for all of us. His leadership leaves a lasting mark on both our team and the industry as a whole.

While we’ll certainly miss seeing him around the office and on site, we know he’s moving on to a different kind of course now, one with greens, fairways, and hopefully far fewer hazard assessments.

Thank you, Doug, for everything you’ve done for our team and our industry. Wishing you a retirement filled with great golf, good health, and plenty of well-earned relaxation.

Please join us in congratulating Doug on his incredible career and wishing him all the best in retirement!

At Cormorant, powerline safety is integrated into our daily operations, not limited to a single week each year. Our crews work daily around energized overhead and underground infrastructure. These risks extend beyond our industry to all trades, contractors, and the public.

Many incidents result from a lack of awareness. Raising awareness about powerline dangers is central to our commitment to safety, education, and community protection.

To help prevent serious injury or fatal shock from powerline contact at home or work, follow these essential safety tips:

⚠️ Stay at least 3 metres from overhead powerlines. You do not need to touch a powerline to receive a deadly shock. If you are too close, electricity can arc to you or your tools. Maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres, roughly the length of a 10-step ladder.

⚠️ Stay at least 10 metres from downed powerlines. Always assume downed lines are energized, even if they do not arc or spark. If you see a downed line, call 911, keep at least 10 metres away (about the length of a school bus), and report it to the local electrical distribution company. Only a utility worker on-site can confirm when the power is off.

⚠️ Remove distractions. Distractions can be deadly. Before working near Powerlines, eliminate potential distractions, such as your phone, whether at home or on a job site.

⚠️Identify all nearby powerlines, including overhead and underground, before starting outdoor work. Before digging, contact Ontario One Call to locate utility-owned underground infrastructure.

Safety begins with awareness. Stay alert, be prepared, and take action to stay safe. Share these tips to help protect others.
