You would think being a professional at rodent management using poison and rodenticides is necessary. I have never used them and would be in favor of a total BC wide rodenticide ban.
This is the Kootenays! specifically the West Kootenays. We protect our environment, our wildlife and pets. There are better ways to manage rats. Just ask.

Owls help keep rodent populations in check.
Bats can eat thousands of insects in a single night.
Crows clean up waste and help keep the environment balanced.

No sprays.
No poison.
No hidden harm to the rest of the food chain.

Just nature—working exactly the way it was meant to.

When we choose toxic solutions, we don’t just remove “pests”…
we risk harming the very animals that protect our homes for free.

You’re not in danger. You’re just standing too close to a defense that hopes it won’t be used.

But the detail most people miss is how far a skunk will go to avoid that moment.

A skunk doesn’t open with its strongest move. It starts with signals. Stomping, turning its back, tail raised high. It is giving you time to understand the situation.

Because spraying comes at a cost.

A skunk has a limited reserve, and once it’s used, it can take over a week to fully replenish. During that window, it is far more exposed to predators that won’t hesitate.

The spray itself is not random. It is a targeted mix of sulfur compounds that cling to skin and air, designed to last long enough to teach a permanent lesson.

Most encounters never reach that point.

If you slow down and create space, the moment passes without consequence. No spray, no chaos, no harm.

Just a quiet agreement between two animals who chose not to escalate.

It was never about attacking. It was always about avoiding the need to.

If you find a fawn alone in your yard:

It is almost certainly NOT abandoned.

Deer mothers INTENTIONALLY leave fawns alone for hours.

→ Fawns have NO scent (predators can't find them)
→ Their spots mimic dappled light (perfect camouflage)
→ Their instinct is to lie perfectly still, no matter what
→ Mom returns to nurse only 2-3 times per day (dawn and dusk)
→ She stays AWAY to avoid leading predators to the fawn

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE IN APRIL:
→ Finding a fawn alone
→ Assuming it's abandoned
→ Picking it up
→ Calling wildlife rehab or taking it home

You just "orphaned" a fawn whose mother was 200 yards away, watching you take her baby.

THE TEST:
→ Is the fawn crying continuously? (not just occasionally — constant distress)
→ Is it visibly injured or bleeding?
→ Has it been in the EXACT same spot for 24+ hours?
→ Is there a dead doe nearby?

If NO to all: LEAVE IT. Walk away. Check from a DISTANCE in 24 hours.

If YES to any: Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

DO NOT:
→ Touch it (human scent CAN cause the mother to be wary)
→ Feed it (cow's milk kills fawns — their digestive system can't handle it)
→ Move it (mom returns to the exact spot she left it)
→ Take a selfie with it (you're standing on a baby deer's hiding spot)

The most helpful thing you can do for a fawn:

Nothing. Literally nothing.

Walk away. Let mom do her job. 🦌
