It’s nice when a pruning job works out best for both parties 🤝 My clients wanted some more light and clearance, and once I got into the canopy I realized this tree had been topped, albeit lightly. So the thinning & reductions I did to improve the future structure served as a guiding point to achieve our goal! 🪿❤️🌳

I had the pleasure of inspecting and pruning out some diseased material from these two legacy western white pines at the Storey Creek Golf Club. Pine Blister Rust was detected, so the hope is to remove the infected material before sporulation to minimize spread. The way they frame the fairway on a misty morning cannot be understated, and I smelled amazing afterwards 🤩

Weekend gear tip!

Here’s a simple progress capture you can make with gear that’s likely in your bag already. Capturing the eye of the sling in the pinto is crucial to keep it aligned without riding around the carabiner. If I want a 3:1, just add an alpine butterfly and a carabiner to the standing end (could use a prussik but this avoids slip). Enjoy! 🪿❤️

A little summer refreshment for the tops of these osmanthus hedges 🌿 With evergreen leaves and fragrant white flowers, osmanthus x burkwoodii makes a great alternative to our more popular hedging plants.

I will add the caveat that this tree had targets present below; a big tree with no targets presents little to no risk and deadwood is a natural and crucial part of forest (yes, even urban forest) ecosystems. Don’t know? Call an arborist!

I had a great time leading a “Summer Fruit Tree Pruning” workshop this weekend, courtesy of Comox Valley Hort Society and graciously hosted by members Linda & Dave. I got to do one of my favourite things, which is yap about trees (and mulching apparently 😅) to an eager audience. It’s mildly terrifying to get up and play expert, 10x such when it’s to a group of avid horticulturalists. A little monkey puzzle met its demise by sea, and the task of removal fell to me! These fascinating trees come from South America, and seem to be having a hard time with heat of the last few summers (like most trees). There’s some pain involved no matter what, but the savvy arb knows that chipping/carrying the limbs backwards can save you some blood 😂🩸🦔
