If you lost power during the last storm, here's what's worth checking once it's back on.

Walk your breaker panel first. If one breaker tripped and stayed off while everything else came back on, that's usually a sign something on that circuit needs attention, not just a random outage.

Check any outdoor outlets or fixtures that took on rain. If something feels warm, smells off, or a GFCI won't reset, don't force it, that outlet needs to be looked at before it's used again.
If your power flickered several times before going out fully, that's often a sign of a loose connection somewhere on the line, and it's worth having checked even after everything seems back to normal.

Here are a few things worth checking on your outdoor outlets and wiring this month.

Your outdoor outlets should have a tight-fitting cover, even with something plugged in. If the cover won't close all the way, water can get in.

If a GFCI outlet trips every time you plug in a lawn tool or pressure washer, that usually points to moisture or a wiring issue behind the outlet, not the tool.

Warm or discoloured outlets are worth having checked, even those you barely use. That's not normal in any season.

Running an extension cord from an indoor outlet out a window or door to reach the yard is a workaround, not a fix. If you're doing that regularly, you likely need an actual outdoor outlet installed.

The basics are simpler than most people expect. Panels go on the roof, an inverter converts the energy into something your home can use, and any extra power you generate goes back to the grid. Most home repairs have a forgiving margin. If you hang a shelf a little crooked, you can take it down and try again. If you cut a board too short, you grab another one.

Electrical is not like that.

A wire connected the wrong way can hold up for months before it overheats inside a wall. A circuit that looks dead can still carry voltage. Cutting corners on box fill, breaker sizing, or grounding can mean a system that passes every visible test and starts a fire two years later. The damage often shows up long after the work is done, which makes it harder to trace and more expensive to fix.

The other piece most people do not think about is insurance. If a fire is ever traced back to unpermitted electrical work, the claim can get denied entirely.

The AC kicks on. The string lights are running across the back deck. The patio speaker is plugged in. The pressure washer is going in the driveway. Somebody is charging a phone on the outdoor outlet. Then the breaker trips.

Summer overloads are one of the most common electrical calls we get this time of year. The outdoor circuits in a lot of Edmonton homes were sized for a much shorter list of things. A single outlet for the trimmer, maybe a Christmas light timer. Not the way we actually use our yards now.

The fix usually means adding a dedicated circuit or two for the high draw items, especially the AC condenser and anything with a pump or motor. Pot lights, string lights, and outdoor speakers can usually share a circuit safely. Anything with a heating element or compressor really should not.

Repeated breaker trips are not just an inconvenience. Each one is the system protecting you from something. If yours keeps tripping outside this summer, get an electrician to take a look before it stops being a tripped breaker and starts being a fire.
