People building new usually find out what's in an electrical scope after the fact, when something they assumed was included turns out not to be.

Edmonton loses just over two hours of daylight in October. Sunset is 7:12 on the first and 6:05 by the thirty-first, and most people notice it the first evening they come home to a dark driveway.

Worth walking the outside of the house while it's still mild. Burnt-out bulbs over the front door. A motion light that stopped triggering. The back step with nothing over it at all. Fixtures that are cracked or holding water, which usually means they weren't rated for outside in the first place.

While you're at it, smart switches are worth a look. The point isn't turning your lights off from the couch. It's the outdoor lights coming on at sunset on their own all winter, without you nudging a timer forward every few weeks as sunset keeps moving. They go in where your existing switch already is, though some need a neutral wire at the box, and older Edmonton homes don't always have one.

All of it is far easier to handle in September than in December with a ladder on an icy walk.

Solar gets written off around here as a summer thing, which is strange when you look at the numbers. Edmonton averages about 2,345 hours of sun a year, third most of any major city in Canada. That's more than Toronto and well more than Vancouver, and it's why Alberta keeps landing near the top of the national solar rankings.

Winter holds up better than people expect too. Solar cells lose efficiency as they heat up, so a clear cold day converts sunlight better than a hot afternoon in July does. Daylight hours are the real limit, so you're still producing less than you would in summer, but the sun you do get works harder.

Snow's the question we get most, and it cuts both ways. Sitting on the panel it blocks output until it clears, though dark panels on a tilt usually shed it within a few hours of sun. On the ground it does the opposite. Fresh snow bounces back most of the light hitting it, and if you've got bifacial panels that collect from both sides, that reflection is a real gain in the months you'd least expect one.

The part worth sorting out now is the electrical side. Your panel needs room for the connection, your service has to carry it, and a battery is far cheaper to plan for than to retrofit.

Plenty of home projects are fair game for a weekend. A few aren't, and it's usually because the risk shows up months later.

⚡ Opening your electrical panel. The main lugs stay live even with the breaker off, so there's no safe way to try it yourself.

🔌 Adding a circuit for a hot tub, EV charger or garage heater. These need a load calculation first to confirm your service can carry it, plus the right breaker size and a disconnect where one's required. Wire that's one size undersized runs warm for years before anything shows.

🏠 Swapping a two-prong outlet for a three-prong. It's the most common DIY fix in older Edmonton homes, and it's the one that fools people. Without a ground wire behind it, the new outlet looks safer but isn't.

Electrical fires almost never start with something dramatic. They start with a connection that's been running a little warm for a couple of years, and nobody had any reason to look at it.

The most common one in Edmonton is plain overload. Houses built before the 90s were wired for a lamp and a radio, and now that same circuit carries a vacuum, a TV, a couple of chargers, and a power bar plugged into another power bar. The wire heats up, and that heat does the damage over time.

After that, it's cords. A cord run under a rug or pinched behind a dresser wears through where you can't see it happening. Extension cords were built to be temporary, and a space heater in particular belongs straight in a wall outlet, never in a power bar.

Then there's the small stuff that's easy to shrug off. A plug that falls out of the outlet on its own. A switch plate that feels warm. Both mean the connection behind them has loosened, and both take about ten minutes to fix properly.

None of that means your house is unsafe. It means these are worth a look.

Most of the work in a fire alarm install happens before the first device goes on the ceiling.

Device placement is determined by the actual room layout, not spaced evenly just to look tidy. Circuits are laid out so that a fault can be traced to a single device rather than a whole floor.

Everything gets interconnected so one alarm sounds them all, and the verification and as-built documentation gets handed over at the end, so the next person working on that building knows what’s in the walls.

We plan for that in the drawings early on new builds, renovations, and commercial projects, because catching it at inspection means opening finished work.

Smart lighting is great right up until a babysitter is standing in your kitchen wondering how to turn on a light. 🤷

That's why we usually put in smart switches rather than smart bulbs. The switch on the wall still works like a switch for anyone who doesn't want to download anything, and the app is there for everyone who does.

The catch is behind the plate. Most smart switches need a neutral wire at the box, and many Edmonton homes wired before the 90s don't have one there. Sometimes that means pulling new wire; sometimes it means picking a switch that doesn't need one.

Once it's in, your outdoor lights can even follow the actual sunset instead of a timer.
