The History of Biafra
Biafra was a breakaway state that existed from 1967 to 1970 in southeastern Nigeria.
🔹 How It Started
After Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960, there were strong ethnic and political tensions between major groups:
Hausa-Fulani (North
Yoruba (West)
Igbo (East)
In 1966, military coups and counter-coups led to violence, especially against Igbo people living in northern Nigeria. Many Igbos returned to the Eastern Region for safety.
On May 30, 1967, the military governor of the Eastern Region, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, declared the region independent as the Republic of Biafra.
🔹 The Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970)
The Nigerian government rejected the declaration, and war broke out.
This conflict is known as the Nigerian Civil War or the Biafran War.
It lasted about 3 years
There was severe fighting
A blockade caused famine in Biafra
An estimated 1–3 million people died, many from starvation
The war ended in January 1970 when Biafra surrendered and rejoined Nigeria.
🔹 Why It Still Matters Today
The memory of the war still affects politics in southeastern Nigeria. Some groups, like Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), believe the region is still marginalized and continue to call for independence.
