Today’s removal was a strong reminder that arboriculture is about more than just cutting trees it’s about assessing the entire ecosystem around them.
Our crew was called in to remove two hazardous dead trees located in a high-risk work zone, with a roadway in front, property line beside, septic infrastructure below, and the home directly behind. This required precise planning, control and careful ex*****on.
During the removal, we discovered something unexpected a nest of baby swallows inside a cavity stem.
At ATR Arborist Services Inc., safety doesn’t stop with our crew, clients, and property. It extends to wildlife as well.
Rather than removing the entire stem, the crew adjusted the operation in real time with the homeowner to preserve the cavity containing the nest. The hollow stem was safely retained and capped to help protect the young birds from weather and debris while giving the parents continued access.
This is where experience matters. A true arborist doesn’t just see wood and branches we evaluate habitat, structural integrity, risk, and environmental value all at once.
Dead trees can absolutely pose serious hazards, but even within removals, there are opportunities to preserve ecological function where practical. Wildlife cavities are critical microhabitats used by birds, bats, and beneficial insects. Preserving them when safe to do so helps maintain biodiversity.

These guys were extremely professional. They left part of the middle tree because we found a swallow’s nest in the tree, and they were very careful with the five babies to make sure their nest stayed clean and free of debris. Put a cap on the top of the tree too for now as it was hollow. Also left a nice pile of hardwood for me to split and dry for next winter’s firewood.”
