A kitchen renovation completed with a properly installed exterior range exhaust system.

During this kitchen renovation, the new range hood location had no existing exterior ventilation in place. Without a properly installed exhaust system, cooking moisture, grease, smoke, and odours remain trapped inside the home.

We installed the new kitchen range exhaust hood, then fabricated and installed a properly sized round metal duct system routed through the attic space to the exterior.

The exhaust duct was fully insulated throughout the attic space in accordance with BC Building Code requirements to help prevent condensation and moisture issues.

A range hood is only as effective as the ductwork connected to it. Proper sizing, routing, and installation are critical for removing contaminants from your home and improving indoor air quality.

Sometimes the biggest problems are the ones you can't see.

We were called to inspect this home for the installation of a new kitchen range exhaust. While in the attic, we discovered that the bathroom exhaust duct had become disconnected.

Instead of exhausting moisture outdoors, the bathroom fan had been blowing warm, humid air directly into the attic. Over time, that moisture had resulted in mould growth on the underside of the roof sheathing.

To correct the issue, we reran the insulated exhaust duct, properly secured it, and ensured the bathroom fan now exhausts outdoors as intended.

This is a good reminder that not all attic moisture problems are caused by roof leaks. A disconnected or improperly installed bathroom exhaust duct can introduce significant amounts of moisture into an attic, leading to mould, wood deterioration, and reduced insulation performance.

If your bathroom fan has never been inspected, or you've noticed condensation, musty odours, or signs of moisture in your attic, it may be worth having the ventilation system checked.

Sometimes the equipment isn't the real problem.

This project came to us after the heat pump compressor had failed and the homeowner was dealing with a system that was extremely noisy. After inspecting the installation, it became clear that the ductwork layout was one of the worst I have seen. The air handler was installed backwards, the main duct system was poorly laid out, and the entire system was working much harder than it needed to.

Our solution included:
• Removing the existing main duct system.
• Installing a properly sized return air grille.
• Rotating the air handler into a more efficient orientation.
• Fabricating and installing new supply and return duct trunks.

The difference was immediate. The system is now quiet, airflow is significantly improved, and the new heat pump can operate the way it was designed to.

This project is a great reminder that HVAC performance is about much more than the equipment itself. A well-designed duct system is the foundation of an efficient, quiet, and reliable heating and cooling system.

What Can You Build from Scrap Sheet Metal?

Added a bear and a rabbit to the collection, both made entirely from leftover off-cuts around the shop. What started as cleanup is turning into a consistent way to stay sharp with fabrication.

Following a suggestion from my friend on my last post, I finally got around to making a bear. This fella hasn't missed a meal, though. I also added a rabbit to the collection, both made entirely from leftover off-cuts around the shop.
