SnoWorks Snoworks – Snow Removal and Winter Access Management for the North Slocan Valley

❄️ Storm update – 15cm wet snowfall ❄️

We have completed service following approximately 15cm of heavy, high-moisture content snow across our routes.

This event created dense accumulation with increased potential for hardpack and freeze-back. ATV plows and walk behind snowblowers have a very hard time in these conditions.

We were able to scrape to ground in a lot of cases with our machinery to help prevent rutting and saturation of the driveway base.

Completed:

• Full plow and snowblowing for all clients
• Detail scraping with our ice blade
• Targeted sanding

We’ll continue monitoring for icing as temperatures shift later on this week.

📣 Introducing the newest addition to the Snoworks fleet ❄️

Meet The Sandman!

This 2012 Ford F550 (6.7L Powerstroke diesel) is fully emission compliant and purpose-built for serious winter operations in our mountain environment.

Equipped with:
• 10’ hydraulic commercial V-plow with downforce for superior scraping performance
• 3 cubic yard hydraulic sander with precision, speed-activated spread controls
• Heavy-duty build tailored for West Kootenay winter conditions

The Sandman expands our service capacity, strengthens our commercial response capability, and adds another layer to our contingency backup plan.

Another machine.
Another level of reliability.
Ready to serve.

Just another day!

Full service completed today for all of our contract clients. ❄️🚜

Although snowfall totals were below our standard service threshold in many areas, we proceeded with a full pass to ensure safe, reliable winter access for everyone we serve.

Events like this can be deceptively impactful — light accumulation combined with traffic compaction and fluctuating temperatures quickly turns into hardpack and ice. Proactive service prevents those conditions before they become a problem

We are proud of the precision work delivered by our tractor operator, Carla Meckling, consistent results in all conditions.

We’re glad to play our part in keeping the community moving.

Winter Operations: What You Don’t See Still Matters

We completed another full service pass this week and wanted to share a bit of behind-the-scenes reality from winter operations.

During this round:

• An industrial tarp was accidentally drawn into our snowblower and had to be carefully cut free.
• A hydraulic wing deflector developed a stress crack and required welding before returning to service.

Situations like this are typically caused by hidden obstacles beneath fresh snowfall. Once covered, items such as tarps, extension cords, hoses, landscaping edges, and tools become extremely difficult to detect.

To help ensure efficient and damage-free service, please take a moment before snowfall to clear your designated service areas.

Prepared properties mean safer, more efficient winter access

No snow = busy in the shop!

Anyone who has operated a hopper sander in sub-zero temperatures knows the issue: material bridging and compaction restricting flow to the auger. Moisture combined with cold temperatures leads to inconsistent feed rates and uneven spread patterns.

We’ve modified our ¾ yard HLA HS100 sander with a 12V electric vi****or mounted to the hopper wall to reduce bridging and maintain consistent material flow during cold snaps. Consistent feed rate = consistent spread pattern = safer surfaces

The objective is steady, predictable output and uniform coverage — especially during freeze/thaw cycles here in the Slocan Valley.

Reliable equipment setup is a key part of delivering dependable ice control for the properties we service.

Well folks, we are in the midst of the worst snow season in 30 years here in the Kootenays.

While the Government’s automated snow pillows are measuring significantly above average, these do not accurately represent the mid elevation snow which we are supposed to have which is equally as important for fire mitigation and contribution to spring freshet. Will this be the seasonal normal moving forward? I suspect not as this will be the third abnormal season in a row for us.

Anyhow, this allows us to catch up on barious projects like hooking up “The Green Machine” to ensure our backup snowblower is in working order. This blower we only use for deep snow events, loading dump trucks or clearing out roads which have been snowed in all year.

Thank you to all of our customers and we may have a few good-news announcements over the next couple of weeks! Stay tuned!!

lf only being a snow removal contractor involved just moving snow...

Here we have a road that we are responsible for. You can see on the left that a portion of the bank has slumped onto the road surface. This forces vehicles to to drive closer to the downhill edge, decreasing safety margins.

This also blocks the drainage ditch which forces ground water onto the road surface which re-freezes.

We spent the afternoon rectifying this issue, hopefully preventing an incident.

This is quite the spring weather we’ve been having!

As part of maintenance Monday, today we installed new cutting edges on our Front Blade.

These new cutting edges, (Sharq) are serrated and are made of AR400 steel (very hard)

As with most things these days, these cutting edges needed to be cut to fit. The wings on the plow needed them to be welded on, which was tricky. If the steel is heated too much, the metal looses its hardness.

The end result is a raked-like surface, which greatly helps traction and breaks up icy surfaces.

Another pass for all of our customers! Including this footage from a new client’s driveway. We love seeing different areas of the community we serve.

We are expecting another significant snowfall over the next 36 hours.

Let the preparations begin!
