I know it’s a rough go right now for gardeners in my area. The weather is not cooperating at all it seems. Today I took a deep breath and focused on everything good.

The brassicas (cauliflower, broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage) are absolutely thriving. 1st and 2nd sowings of beets and radish are looking great so far. Peas are taking off. Carrots are up. Garlic is HUGE!

The perennials are doing amazing. Lush and strong looking. Rhubarb is trying to reach to space it seems. Need to harvest a good amount and refeed. Chop and freeze

Have not lost a new perennial plant or tree in 6 years so thats a win that I will take. 🍀 Mulch, mulch, mulch.

New water station area for the pollinators. Planted Gloriosa Daisies and pink Yarrow around it. Should look awesome by next year. Patience is key with perennials.

Since I am resisting the urge to transplant sensitive crops for another week I’ll be taking that time to plant all remaining seeds, plant the final 40 asparagus and head over to Hurkett Hill Farm to plant all the cut flowers over there.

Stay positive people. Share a smile or a nice word. Just because.

This is why I HIGHLY recommend not planting your hot weather plants like tomatoes, peppers and eggplant among others until roughly two weeks after last frost which is June 8th this year. If you have a heated greenhouse that is a different story.

When temperatures drop below 10°C, the plant's photosynthesis slows significantly, resulting in much smaller plants and delayed harvests.

Exposure to chilling temperatures (below 10°C to 13°C) directly before or during flowering negatively impacts pollen viability. This causes poor pollination, a low rate of successful fruit set, and increases the likelihood of misshapen (catfaced) fruits.

Below 12°C to 14°C, the plant’s roots struggle to uptake essential nutrients like phosphorus, which can cause a purple discoloration in seedlings and leaves. Cold-induced stress also hinders the plant's ability to utilize calcium, leading to disorders like blossom end rot in early developing fruits.

Personally I will be taking advantage of the nice daytime temps to harden them off really well until planting time.

How wonderful! Great that it’s local. I know I’ll be donating some seeds to them this fall.

Plant, grow and enjoy, then share harvested seeds- then repeat next growing season!

Cheers to you Hurkett, Red Rock & Nipigon!

It’s been another amazing year for the plant sales and I’m so thankful for your support.

I am getting asked if im doing any more sales. The answer is not officially.

BUT, like previous years, once I am done my own planting I will have a quick fire sale of plants I have left. I tend to overestimate what I need every year haha.

I will be announcing the days that people will be able to come to the property once it is time.

So watch the page and keep your car keys handy.

The dreaded squash bug.

Squash bugs can quickly turn a thriving garden into a struggling patch of damaged plants. These pests feed on the sap of squash and related plants, causing wilting, yellowing, and even death if left unchecked. Knowing how to identify and control squash bugs early can save your garden and improve you...

I know I’ve been pretty quiet on this page last few weeks but I’m hustling hard getting my new inground gardens dug up, removing sod and prepping the garden boxes and poly tunnels.

Plus new goats and turkeys so it’s been a lot lol.

I will be at the NIPIGON market at the Community Centre tomorrow at 10am sharp. Hurkett Hill Farm will also be there with lots of plants and goodies like their AMAZING skin salve.

The trailer will be parked out back with access from the inside market area. It’s looking to be a beautiful sunny day.

Peppers, tomatoes, herbs, perennials, annuals, onions, celery.

See your smiling faces tomorrow!
