In the ground they go! It’s been a week since our Degroot's Nurseries starts have been hardened off.

Kale, green chard, garden sage, cilantro, celery, and dill were transplanted today.

PRO-TIP: You’ll notice chard, dill, cilantro, and many herbs are actually multiple plants together in a cell. Carefully split seedlings ensuring that their roots are still attached to the soil plug. Splitting ensures proper growth & stronger, larger plants.

We also direct-seeded some radishes for a quick crop as we get ready for our heat-lovers 🍅🫑🥒

Once they pop, radishes will require insect netting (or an old sheer curtain), to keep off the pressure of flea beetles as temperatures warm.

Flies buzzing and worms wriggling? That’s the sign of healthy soil! 🪰🪱🌱

YOU WILL NEED:

✅ COMPOST ➡️ To inoculate your soil with beneficial microbes & nematodes. While we tend to think of compost as “plant food,” it is actually livestock management on a 🔎 scale! All the good microorganisms that are going to break down minerals in the soil for water-solubility

✅ NATURAL FERTILIZER (manure) ➡️ While the ground gradually warms up and becomes lively again with all our favourite soil organisms, our spring crops can use a nitrogen boost ☀️🐓 Our soil organisms become irritated with too much nitrogen, and fertilizers run off over the course of the season with rain and soil erosion - don’t spend a ton on fertilizers beyond the initial boost. Instead, focus on increasing beneficial nematode and microorganism populations to ensure consistent fertilization.

✅ ALFALFA MEAL (worm food) ➡️ The worms are hungry and food is still scarce as temperatures gradually increase. Alfalfa meal attracts our friends to the topsoil and helps kickstart our soil fertilization for the season, while giving the little wrigglers energy to do what they do best 🪱

Make sure to aerate your soil (just hoeing through or using a pitchfork will do), and ensure planters/pots are draining properly 💧

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!🦃 Thank you to all of our donors, suppliers, and wonderful happy helpers for making tonight so special for our neighbours on London Line 🤝💓🍲

We were able to distribute 50 turkey dinners, as well as copious amounts of hot chocolate and tea, a hearty bean & turkey soup, and some fresh fruit, dinner rolls, ramen noodles…. AND - of course - delicious, homemade chocolate chip cookies prepared by my dear friend Nadeen Abdullazada! 🍪 We also raised an additional $75 above material costs, which will be donated to the Good Shepherd's Lodge to support their operations.

Thank you to Math Plus Tutors & Taproots Green Gardens for your generosity! Thank you to the Sarnia Muslim Association and The Inn of the Good Shepherd for your support with logistics and coordination!

Thank you to Huron Farm, Aslan Organics, and Vrolyk Farms for providing ingredients for the most perfect, wholesome turkey dinner!
